1/ Utah will not flip blue. But voters there have defied their conservative supermajority to demand big progressive changes. And mobilized a lot of new voters in the process. Sound familiar?

2/ Think of this piece as either a harbinger how Dems win on 11/3 or a blueprint for how they proceed if the GOP's scheme to thwart the popular vote succeeds. By @billgifford

5/ One of the things about a state being so in a lockhold of one party is that the rest of the country never really learns how that continues to be the case. Did you know that only 60% of Utah is even nominally Mormon and that young Mormons in particular standing up to old guard?
6/ And then there's this:
7/ The thing about one party controlling state government is that it's ripe for corruption: motherjones.com/politics/2020/…
8/ Anyway, I promise you that, if you live in one of the 49 other states, this piece on Utah's changing politics will surprise you: motherjones.com/politics/2020/…

Deputies with NC's @SheriffAlamance pepper spray peaceful protestors on a GOTV march including ministers, the elderly, and small kids. newsobserver.com/news/local/art…
This is the Sheriff's statement. And, oh, they also arrested reporters documenting this abuse:
Totally normal equipment to be wearing when a march of voters with their kids in tow go to the courthouse: Image

The thing is...

Anybody who was alive and in and around journalism in Shalit’s heyday could have known this would end badly. Exactly the same kind of shit and subsequent excuses that happened back then. Exactly.
“Through her attorney, Sloane informed us that she does not, in fact, have a son. We have independently corroborated that Sloane does not have a son, and we have corrected the story to remove the reference to her having a son.”

My god.
Also...I haven’t lived in DC since the early 90s but I can assure you that her behavior back then—and that of those who initially covered for it—utterly transfixed and enraged a generation of her journalistic peers.

She still owes Klaidman a real fucking apology, for one thing.

One of the most interesting presentations I've ever heard was a Google News Lab thing where a Dalit journalist was challenging Google/tech to recognize this problem and their role in perpetuating it. It was like a brain lightbulb being flicked on.
He also noted how tech companies point to diversity that comes largely from Desi employees, but who are most/all of one caste, thereby perpetuating a different form of racism than the one white/American execs knew.
And he asked the folks in the room who were Indian/Indian American if they knew which cast they were in, they all did. And which caste, which i think was ~100% Brahmin. (Which represents giant regional biases w/in India as well as which work your ancestors were allowed to do)

Don't really understand how lefties can be upset that @ProjectLincoln is starting a media company unless they

a)felt the same way about @PodSaveAmerica/@crookedmedia or Young Turks or...

b)changed their mind about need for a conservative but responsible alternative to Fox News?
Also, RIP my mentions, but the @ProjectLincoln podcast is quite good. If the PSA guys bring speechwriting/comms chops, the PL folks have insights from ad buyers/makers/strategists--it's interesting!
Frankly, I'm intrigued by what a post-election landscape holds for either @crookedmedia or @ProjectLincoln.

And, if people who didn't come from your political POV move toward your position, why get angry at them? Honestly, not the best strategy!

IMPORTANT: Facebook is turning up and down the traffic dials to news and opinion sites based on internal partisan concerns, raised by lobbyists working for Joel Kaplan (of Kavanaugh fame).

Every single publisher and journalist should be alarmed. motherjones.com/media/2020/10/…
This story reveals that: algorithmic changes were discussed with impacts to SPECIFIC publishers in mind.

Original goal, to dial down fighting on Facebook, chucked when it was found to hurt conservative sites. Algo reworked to punish progressive news orgs instead.
We dug in on reporting on it because we were one of the publishers —SHOWN IN A SLIDE DECK TO FB EXECUTIVES—to be ultimately harmed.

But who else?
And who's next?
