Anybody who was alive and in and around journalism in Shalit’s heyday could have known this would end badly. Exactly the same kind of shit and subsequent excuses that happened back then. Exactly.
“Through her attorney, Sloane informed us that she does not, in fact, have a son. We have independently corroborated that Sloane does not have a son, and we have corrected the story to remove the reference to her having a son.”
My god.
Also...I haven’t lived in DC since the early 90s but I can assure you that her behavior back then—and that of those who initially covered for it—utterly transfixed and enraged a generation of her journalistic peers.
She still owes Klaidman a real fucking apology, for one thing.
Anyway thankfully one of those who came up in the exact same era has a job as a media reporter... @ErikWemple.
A fact which should been known/factored in to decision to pub her. And he’s not even alone in that same combination of era/job!
“Sloane’s World”
All the worst fabulists—and I once edited a Stephen Glass* story—play to our prejudices and preconceptions.
*i have publicly disagreed with people far more burned by him than I about giving him a 3rd chance. Journalistic exile is not a death sentence, it’s a prophylactic.

1/ Utah will not flip blue. But voters there have defied their conservative supermajority to demand big progressive changes. And mobilized a lot of new voters in the process. Sound familiar?
2/ Think of this piece as either a harbinger how Dems win on 11/3 or a blueprint for how they proceed if the GOP's scheme to thwart the popular vote succeeds. By @billgifford
One of the most interesting presentations I've ever heard was a Google News Lab thing where a Dalit journalist was challenging Google/tech to recognize this problem and their role in perpetuating it. It was like a brain lightbulb being flicked on.
He also noted how tech companies point to diversity that comes largely from Desi employees, but who are most/all of one caste, thereby perpetuating a different form of racism than the one white/American execs knew.
And he asked the folks in the room who were Indian/Indian American if they knew which cast they were in, they all did. And which caste, which i think was ~100% Brahmin. (Which represents giant regional biases w/in India as well as which work your ancestors were allowed to do)
b)changed their mind about need for a conservative but responsible alternative to Fox News?
Also, RIP my mentions, but the @ProjectLincoln podcast is quite good. If the PSA guys bring speechwriting/comms chops, the PL folks have insights from ad buyers/makers/strategists--it's interesting!
IMPORTANT: Facebook is turning up and down the traffic dials to news and opinion sites based on internal partisan concerns, raised by lobbyists working for Joel Kaplan (of Kavanaugh fame).
This story reveals that: algorithmic changes were discussed with impacts to SPECIFIC publishers in mind.
Original goal, to dial down fighting on Facebook, chucked when it was found to hurt conservative sites. Algo reworked to punish progressive news orgs instead.
We dug in on reporting on it because we were one of the publishers —SHOWN IN A SLIDE DECK TO FB EXECUTIVES—to be ultimately harmed.
