It's Friday afternoon, and here's the weekly look back at the coronavirus figures across Devon and Cornwall, and cases have risen across the two counties (although only just in some places), but for the second week in a row, have fallen in Exeter
The total confirmed number of cases has today hit 10,000 across the two counties. It only crossed the 9,000 mark on Monday, with Friday's figures seeing 292 new cases. Plymouth’s figures rose over the 2,000 mark today. It hit 1,000 on October 5.
Government statistics show that 1,662 new cases have been confirmed across the region in the past seven days in both pillar 1 data from tests carried out by the NHS and pillar 2 data from commercial partners, compared to 1,395 new cases confirmed last week.
Cases have risen everywhere except for Exeter, which has seen a drop for the second successive week, while the rises in East Devon, Mid Devon, North Devon and West Devon were in single figures. The largest rises occurred in Plymouth, Cornwall, and Torbay.
Of the 1,662 new cases, 311 were in Cornwall, 124 in East Devon, 196 in Exeter, 52 in Mid Devon, 64 in North Devon, 426 in Plymouth, 76 in the South Hams, 117 in Teignbridge, 213 in Torbay, 35 in Torridge and 38 in West Devon.
This compares to the 1,395 new cases confirmed at the same time last week, with 188 in Cornwall, 116 in East Devon, 252 in Exeter, 47 in Mid Devon, 55 in North Devon, 369 in Plymouth, 54 in the South Hams, 89 in Teignbridge, 182 in Torbay, 18 in Torridge and 35 in West Devon.
Of the 1,662 new cases, 1,108 have a specimen day between October 23 and 29 – compared to the 894 of the 1,395 of last week's cases that had specimen date of between October 16 and 22.
Of the 1,108 of the cases, 184 cases in Cornwall occurred in that period, with 88 in East Devon, 116 in Exeter, 36 in Mid Devon, 56 in North Devon, 298 in Plymouth, 60 in the South Hams, 69 in Teignbridge, 152 in Torbay, 26 in Torridge and 23 in West Devon.
Maps by specimen date show cases are trending down in Exeter, while East Devon, and Mid Devon fairly flat but falling in the most recent data. North Devon and Plymouth also show a slight fall in the latest day for the seven day average, but the trend is for cases to be rising
Here are the specimen date maps for East Devon, Exeter, Mid Devon and North Devon
And for the South Hams, Teignbridge, Torridge and West Devon
And for Cornwall, Plymouth, Torbay, and the Devon County Council area
The number of people in hospital in the South West has risen to 386 from 248 from as of last week and there are currently 34 people on a mechanical ventilator, with a 20 per cent rise of people in hospital across Devon and Cornwall following a positive COVID-19 test this week
The NHS England figures, released this morning, give the latest details of the admissions and diagnoses of coronavirus patients by hospital trust. It shows that as of October 27, the most recent data available for, there were 99 people in Devon’s hospital and four in Cornwall
Of the 103 patients, there were 33 in Torbay Hospital (up from 30), 32 in Derriford Hospital in Plymouth (22), 23 at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (14), 11 in the North Devon District Hospital (7), and four at the Royal Cornwall Hospital (3)
There is currently no-one in Cornish Partnership Trust hospitals (down from 1). As of October 27, there were nine patients in Mechanical Ventilation beds – two in Torbay, Derriford and Exeter, and three in the Royal Cornwall hospital – up from six as of October 20.
In the last seven days, ten people have died in hospitals in Devon following a positive COVID-19 test, with one in North Devon and Exeter, two Plymouth, and six in Torbay.
But NHS 111 data for Devon has fallen by around 40 per cent in the last seven days, and in Cornwall, is down by a third, both today to their lowest level since August 22. The R Rate for the South West has fallen from 1.3-1.6 to 1.2-1.5
In total, Torridge has had 170 positive cases, West Devon 210, with 350 in the South Hams, 365 in North Devon, 419 in Mid Devon, 624 in Teignbridge, 706 in East Devon, 955 in Torbay, 1890 in Exeter, 2063 in Plymouth, and 2303 in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
There have been warnings issued by Public Health directors this week that Plymouth and Torbay could be heading into Tier 2 - nothing has been confirmed this week and neither were part of the mass changes announced yesterday - but the trends for both areas are heading that way
Talks appear to be more advanced in Plymouth - but I'd be more worried about Torbay, given the age profile of people testing positive there is much higher, as are hospital deaths and beds in hospitals for COVID-19 patients - but both are below the national average for case rates
Usual caveats apply about this only being confirmed cases, and there are probably/definitely are more cases of people who have coronavirus but either haven't got tested or have it without symptoms so don't know they have it
And no MSOA data today - for the second day in a row they haven't updated either the spreadsheet source files or the interactive map, so not quite sure what is happening with this or if updates no longer will be made daily (which would be a bad decision if this was the case)

Saturday's figures show 310 new coronavirus cases in Devon and Cornwall today. 39 in Cornwall, 48 in East Devon, 40 in Exeter, 11 in Mid Devon, 18 in North Devon, 66 in Plymouth, 12 in South Hams, 25 in Teignbridge, 37 in Torbay, 2 in Torridge and 12 in West Devon

And here's the guidance that the Government have provided about what you can/cannot do during the upcoming lockdown (subject to MPs actually voting for it) - although until the actual legislation is published, we won't know for sure what is/isn't legal

gov.uk/guidance/new-n…
The legislation is often different to the guidance and the messaging. For example, for the first lockdown, we were constantly told we could only leave the house once a day for exercise, when in reality, the actual legislation said nothing about how long or often you could do so

It's a Friday afternoon, so I bring you the weekly roundup of coronavirus data in Devon and Cornwall, and the total number of new coronavirus cases confirmed in the last seven days across Devon has risen – but with falls in Plymouth and Cornwall.
Government statistics show that 381 new cases have been confirmed across the region in the past seven days in both pillar 1 data from tests carried out by the NHS and pillar 2 data from commercial partners, compared to 365 new cases confirmed last week.
The number of new cases confirmed in Cornwall has fallen, going from 179 to 132 in the latest seven days, while Plymouth has seen cases more than half, dropping from 74 to 36.

There seems to be some confusion around the confirmation yesterday from Cornwall Council that 170 new cases were confirmed at the Pilgrim’s Pride food factory in Pool - as far as I know, these are not 'new cases' but the total of ones already reported
Since the first announcement about the outbreak, there have been 284 cases confirmed across the whole of Cornwall - the vast majority of which have been in and around the Camborne, Pool and Redruth area where there are currently eight areas where clusters of cases confirmed
The 170 new cases confirmed headline is scary, but also wrong. The 170 cases is the total linked to the factory in the last 2 weeks, and virtually all have already been accounted for in the figures that are provided daily, so there won't be a massive spike of 170 new cases

EXCLUSIVE - University of Exeter students living within the city are being asked not to meet indoors with anyone not part of their households for the next fortnight.
More than half of the cases confirmed in the previous week across Exeter are attributable to the University – mainly from students unwittingly arriving having already been infected elsewhere in the country and passing it onto the housemates.
The University, following discussions with Public Health England, Devon County Council and Exeter City Council, is asking students to take the additional measures to avoid further local restrictions, of the type already seen in a number of other universities.

Given the news this week, it's not exactly a surprise that the number of new coronavirus cases confirmed across Devon and Cornwall has more than doubled - but not everywhere in the two counties is seeing a rise, with a fall in some areas
Government statistics show that 365 new cases have been confirmed across the region in the past seven days in both pillar 1 data from tests carried out by the NHS and pillar 2 data from commercial partners, compared to 155 new cases confirmed last week.
The number of new cases confirmed in Cornwall has tripled, going from 60 to 179, while Plymouth has seen a small rise from 45 to 74. In Torbay, cases have increased ninefold, although from a 2 to 18, while in the Devon County Council area, they have nearly doubled, from 48 to 96.

I mentioned last night that there had been a spike in cases in Exeter, with 15 recorded yesterday, 11 from Sep 20. It can now be confirmed that these cases are mainly linked to students at the University of Exeter who had already contracted coronavirus before arriving
It is understood that the majority of them were asymptomatic and the positive cases were identified via the saliva testing that the Uni are doing for staff and students. All positive cases and households now self-isolating, and no evidence yet of onward community spread
A University of Exeter spokesman said: “We have had a small number of positive Covid-19 cases over the past few days. The health and welfare of all students and staff is our overriding priority, and our Rapid Response Hub is co-ordinating testing and working with PHE....

Another week, and here's the latest round-up of coronavirus figures across Devon and Cornwall, and the number of cases confirmed has risen this week, but only just, with the total up just 1 on last week's number, and in Devon alone, has fallen
Government statistics show that 155 new cases have been confirmed across the region in the past seven days in both pillar 1 data from tests carried out by the NHS and pillar 2 data from commercial partners, compared to 15 new cases confirmed last week.
The number of new cases confirmed in Cornwall has doubled, going from 30 to 60, while Plymouth has seen a small rise from 39 to 45. But in Torbay, cases have fallen dramatically from 12 to 2, while in the Devon County Council area, they have dropped from 71 to 48.
