Just in time for Halloween, the story of the voodoo doctor’s murder 😱
Obie Lee Roddie/Roddy, orig fr GA, appears in the Knoxville City Directory 1943-1948. His jobs during that time, incl bellboy at the Farragut Hotel (now our cross street neighbor, @hyattplaceknoxville).
But his death certificate lists a very different occupation & the motive for his death: herb doctor. One of Mr. Roddie’s neighbors, Alberta Jefferson, convinced that she & her husband were hexed, shot him in the face. Police reports say that he would have died almost instantly.
Investigation of Roddie’s home found records of 174 “patients”, both African American & white, accounts paid & owed, & materials for spells & charms. One newspaper article about the murder even includes a “[prescription] for a ‘lady who can’t keep men friends’”. #Halloween
All the information about Obie Lee Roddie & his death were found with resources available here & online with your @knoxreads card. (Knoxville City Directories, the Knoxville News Sentinel on Newsbank, and Tennessee death certificates on @Ancestry) #Halloween#HauntYourLibrary
