What I know for sure: Every person who has decided to vote for Trump knows EXACTLY who he is and what they are voting for, period.

At best they're voting for a hypocritical and opportunistic liar and charlatan who has triggered a foul and dangerous kind of partisanship.

1/
But we know that the best case scenario is not really what's going on here.

Because the only thing truly different with Trump from most of the GOP is his very public embrace of some of the worst elements of the alt-right (white supremacy) and his refusal to disavow it, ever.

2/
Whether consciously or not the evidence is pretty strong that despite the fact that Trump's actions, words, and policies do great harm to large sections of his base, they continue to be enamored out of what appears a sense of gratitude.

But for what? And why?

3/
Well,I believe the answer to the is both obvious and deeply embedded into this nation's storied history.

Ultimately, their loyalty stems from a perverse loyalty borne of, again, a perverse sense of gratitude for validating and giving voice to their own latent racism.

4/
While racism has always been at the very center of a great many of this country's internal and external cultural struggles, it had been tampered down and nearly filtered away from public discourse; certainly outward displays of blatant racism had become socially problematic.

5/
Despite the obvious racial tensions that grew up around Rodney King's beating and the OJ Simpson trial many whites, particularly suburban whites, educated, had fooled themselves into believing that their own racism had been exorcized and so too, largely, had the nation's.

6/
And outwardly they could point to all kinds of evidence that seemed to be telling them that they were right. People of color were on their TV, and some even lived in their neighborhoods, and hadn't the Supreme Court virtually said as much when it gutted the Voting Rights Act?

7/
And then the election of Barack Obama caused a whole lot of white people to lose their fucking minds. Formerly reasonable people started latching onto conspiracy theories some of which Trump himself personally promoted.

They even turned his name against him.

8/
Trump's personal hatred of Obama is real, demented, and has been responsible for many of the worst things Trump has done since stealing the presidency. That includes this administration's constant attacks on the Affordable Care Act. Obama and Hillary Clinton own his head.

9/
And, in the end, it's Trump's personal crusade against Obama that's largely responsible for where he is today.

He validated that whole '"I can't put my finger on it" crowd. You know who I mean.

They were everywhere. And Trump and the entire GOP understood these people.

10/
The white people who would say things like "I don't know what it is about him. I just can't put my finger on it."

"REALLY?" I wanted to scream at them so often. "Because I know exactly what it is about him."

Not an ounce of self awareness.

Not one.

11/
Trump gave these people permission to feel and say all of it. They had always been there and more numerous than probably most of us thought.

And so they are grateful to beyond telling for his gift.

12/
He told them they were not racists, they were right. And that the mistrust they had for Obama could and should be extended to all POC, and Muslims.

They were right, and they needn't be ashamed.

The significance of this moment cannot be overstated.

13/
And so many have come out of the dark and into the light and now we can see them.

The emperor has no clothes.

Their hitches are now attached to Trump's. Their loyalty some weird combination of gratitude and desperation.

They can not unsay or undo the past four years.

I listen to a lot of podcasts. I mean a lot. It's how I spend my time when I'm not writing or politicking.

I've noticed a trend through many of the political Podcasts I listen to of reporters revisiting white men whom they have interviewed periodically this election cycle.

1/
In almost every case these are men who had voted for Trump in 2016 and were now seemingly conflicted about that choice, and, more importantly, were unsure about how they would vote in 2020.

In most cases these men sounded reasonable and genuinely concerned about this nation.

2/
I almost believed some of them. I certainly hoped for some of them.

So did some of the casters.

But in the end every one of them has inexplicably "decided" to once again vote for Trump.

Many hosts have sounded bewildered. Some agitated.

I could feel their pain.

"If Trump announced that the color yellow was actually the color blue and that the media and the schools system had hoodwinked us all, then the color yellow would become blue to every Trump voter. I'm convinced of that." - Jerry D. Kenosha, WI.

1/
I've been talking to voters here in Kenosha, Wisconsin for about ten days now. The conversations have been wide-ranging and deeply informative. I've always worn a face mask during these conversations and always maintained proper social distancing.

I have learned a lot.

2/
And while the data is purely anecdotal, I believe that Donald Trump has an uphill battle to climb here in the state of Wisconsin if he hopes to repeat 2016.

While his support here is still strong, he has lost many former disciples. And this group is sizable.

If you are enjoying our collective lurch toward a literary level dystopia then by all means don't vote.

You have much to look forward to I promise.

1/
If state promoted racial animosity, that hopes to turn everyone into combatants, is your thing, then don't vote.

If you like to watch others being gouged by predatory lenders with no oversight then don't vote.

2/
If you aren't genuinely concerned about the direction we are going as a country and truly believe that we are in a better place than we were in five or eight years ago, hell, thirteen years ago, then don't vote.

Oh, @donlemon.

I thought you were smarter and more sophisticated than to buy into misogynistic tropes like "Hillary Clinton was the most unpopular..."

I understand that by being a member of one of the groups who most need Clinton to always have been hated you are biased.

1/
I know that it would be easier for people in your profession if what you said were actually true, but it is false. And saying this lie out loud is irresponsible and, for the record, completely unnecessary.

Don't even know where to begin here, because your database is flawed

2/
LET us bypass the fact that from the time she stepped into the national spotlight her relationship with the national media has been slanted at best, and that she has rarely been treated fairly let alone accurately.

So, there is that.

When asked about a peaceful transfer of power Trump said he could not promise one w/ paper ballots in such wide use. There are so many problems with the ballots, he complained. He's fine, of course, with an election run only by electronic ballot thoug.

Venture to guess why?

1/
He argued w/o the ballots there would be "no peaceful transfer of power, and frankly, no transfer. It would be a continuation."

Damn.

He knows this because he knows the Russians will successfully hack the vote in his favor. And he knows it will works because it did once.

2/
Trump comes perilously close to an admission/confession for 2016b here and his turns of phrase regarding the use of ballots border on treason.

There is an underlying and undeniable threat within his verbiage that is horrifying.

And exactly what I warned he would do.

I've had a crush on @1NatalieMaines for 25+ years. Pretty impressive given I am gay. But, if you're paying attention you know that I often get crushes on extraordinary women. Hell, I've been in love with @LoveTinaTurner, @BettyBuckley, & @HillaryClinton most of my life.

1/
I bring this up because @thechicks newest album "Gaslighter" has been getting me through a lot lately.

But it's also a kick in the gut.

I despise cheaters. Infidelity sucks y'all.

I know, It's been done to me so often in the past much of this album is about infidelity.

2/
When @thechicks say anything they don't pull any punches. They sort of just pieface you with it and go back to getting on with things.

It what they do and part of why they amaze me and are still relevant decades after they began.

#Gaslighter is a powerful piece of art.
