As an academic clinician in O&G I try to stay in my lane & comment on #covid only when highlighting my expert colleagues’ work. But for folk like @allisonpearson platforming the #barringtondeclaration and raging against lockdown, I would offer the following advice (1)

Come to Liverpool & see what we are dealing with. Or wait for a couple of weeks - because as sure as night follows day it’s coming soon to a hospital and a community near you (2)

And if it doesn’t (& I really hope no one has to experience what Liverpool is currently enduring) it will be because the advice & guidance of the experts you seem to despise will have made a difference and will have delayed the death of many thousands of people (3)

As my amazing colleague @Dr2NisreenAlwan said
‘Preventing death is delaying death. They’re the same thing’ because we will all die eventually but only someone missing their moral compass would embrace fallacious arguments about letting the virus rip & accepting early death (4)

Don’t @ me about excess deaths from non-COVID causes- because as every clinician who has any knowledge of COVID will tell you- if you ‘let the virus rip’ our hospitals will fill as they have done in Liverpool, elective work will be cancelled & non-COVID death rates will rise (5)

But to end on a positive note- the same experts pilloried by some extreme elements in the media are working night & day to navigate us out of this & science will win. @LivUni are developing new therapies via @LivAgile We are trialling vaccines via @NIHRCRN_nwcoast (6)

And we are working round the clock to deliver mass screening, uncover the immunology of the virus, track the genomic evolution & understand the pathology of #LongCovid We care deeply about the socioeconomic consequences of COVID in a city like Liverpool (7)

And in Liverpool we know that we are stronger together and our resilience will ensure we endure. We value and trust experts - nothing lasts forever- and until they crack this we will take care of each other and do whatever is needed. Our city has faced and conquered worse (end)
