This is your daily pension announcement: The Pension War Room™️ attends the Heritage Savings Trust Fund annual meeting. Well, attended virtually because of COVID. If you want to watch it the recording is below. See Kevin stick-handle! #ABLeg
As you would expect, lots of rah, rah AIMCO stuff. If I may bring your attention to....
They started by saying 90% of AIMCO staff live in Edmonton. This lets you know that AIMCO supports JK's pipe dream to leave the CPP and bring assets to good old 'berta. #ABLeg
The question to ask though is how many AIMCO executives live in AB? I don't know about presently, but in the past there were execs whose families and houses remained in Toronto and they "commuted" to AIMCO in Edmonton. #ABLeg
Question of the night goes to UCP MLA Jason Stephan (see it 20 min before the end of the video). He asks the question along the lines of- if you can't add value above the benchmark why don't you use index products to at least hit benchmark. #ABLeg
Kevin admitted that they are working on creating index products for their clients, a far cry from rah rah AIMCO.
With respect to the subsuming of the ATRF investments, Kevin repeated his oft made assertion that "if we do this right this will benefit all parties." #ABLeg
I would agree, but Kevin and I differ on the relative probability of AIMCO "doing this right". He seems to believe it is >50% and I think <50%. #ABLeg
AIMCo should have a mandate to manage assets "where value exsists". Not where they cost more and return less.
Kevin's best bit is when he says that AIMCO is the best because, well, look at all these other plans like LAPP and SFPP that are in an excellent funded position.
They are in great funded position only because of the hard work and dedication of the pension plan boards.
The LAPP organization itself is responsible for funded position and setting the contribution rate to support the funding of the plan. AIMCO has never made the return required (0.85% above bench I think). Ever. So the LAPP Board has had to cover that through contribution rate.
So AIMCO taking credit for the funded position of the plans denigrates the hard work and dedication of the pension plan boards in managing their liabilities.
AIMCO IS NOT A PENSION MANAGER THEY ARE AN INVESTMENT MANAGER. #ABLeg
Mark Smith UCP MLA for Drayton Valley, a teacher of 30 years, asked a question about investment products for ATRF.
While I applaud the question, the answer from Kevin stated that "teachers had anxiety" about the hijacking. #ABLeg
That is a material misstatement. Teachers are pissed. Angry. Enraged. And they aren't outraged because of the asset mix AIMCO will use. Teachers understand that the ATRF Board remains in control of the overall asset mix. #ABLeg
Teachers' rage flows from having no influence or control over AIMCO, AIMCO's track record, and the arbitrary ideologically driven nature of the GOA's action in this case. The GOA which, may I remind you, is a minority contributor to the plan. #ABLeg
And it isn't just teachers. Members of LAPP, MEPP, PSPP and SFPP are not happy either. They were forced to use AIMCO in perpetuity as well.
AIMCO often opines that the GOA is its sole shareholder. Think about that then go look at BCIMC. #milburned#ABLeg
Kevin, just once, acknowledge the shotgun nature of your relationship with all the Alberta pension plans. #ABLeg

This is your daily pension announcement: The Pension War Room™️ will dive in to the tailings pond that is AIMCO executive compensation. #ABLeg
Kevin is Alberta's highest paid public servant. It, however, a confusing landscape.
This info is available from their Annual Report. I will compare Kevin (CEO) and the guy that left AIMCO because of the VOLTS mess, Peter (Exec VP Public Eq) #ABLeg
It is important to note that we don't know if Peter left AIMCO with a payout or not (cause/no cause). You might think it would be a no-brainer for cause situation. Don't cast aspersions.
But in this industry separation payments are sometimes made to keep things quiet.
The Pension War Room™️ remember! Remember when Travis said:
"Further, I want to emphasize that AIMCo operates independently and at arm’s length from the government, and its only goal will be to serve the best interests of the ATRF as its client." #ABLeg
Remember that the next time Travis appoints new AIMCO Board Members without the knowledge or consent of the clients. What do we do if they perform poorly?
GOA= sole shareholder of AIMCO w/absolute control
also GOA=minority partner in ATRF #ABLeg
As for the #UCPAGM2020 who just voted in favor of separating from CPP:
This is your daily pension announcement: That little guy Shandy is up to his old tricks! The same as Travis when he dropped the pension bomb. Cover it with a friendly sounding Op-Ed in the UCP's favorite rag. #ABLeg
I don't want to give this gas lit missive any more oxygen, so I will just say the real damage that Shandro is doing to rural healthcare will not be felt for 1-3 years.
He is wrongly declaring victory. #ABleg This is going to backfire just as it did for Travis.
"It’s not easy to talk about how much taxpayers should pay Alberta’s doctors."
I disagree. It is easy, but you would need to talk to doctors. Being a junior dictator to doctors is an interesting way to "talk". #ABLeg
This is your daily pension announcement. The Pension War Room™️ would like to remind you that the AIMCO takeover of investment management was sold as "in-sourcing to save money." Whereas with AHS outsourcing seems to save. WTF? #ABLeg
The Pension War Room™️ wonders why Travis would put his foot in his mouth again? Shandy? Shandy? Where are you little buddy? Travis is stealing your level of stupid. #ABLeg
Ever get the feeling that all this Western alienation talk is really politicians living in the past trying to deal with the NEP?
Why does Travis have a typo in his press release? Don't we pay the communications people enough? #ABLeg
So many questions, so little time.
In a free market economy the government only has very limited influence over the economy. Things like commodity prices and structural revolution in the economy..... #ABLeg
The Pension War Room™️ brings you the advice that was given to Travis on the CPP! Since all this RCMP stuff is hitting the fan, I gotta pile on. Nobody wants an Alberta Pension Plan to replace CPP. #ABLeg
Especially since it would cost more. Lots more.
Travis was given advice on withdrawing from CPP on Sept 18, 2019. It read in part:
"The ability to pool risks associated with longevity, mortality, and investment, which are an advantageous feature associated with funding defined benefit pension plans,..."
"...would be considerably smaller under an Alberta Pension Plan."
In other words, withdrawing from CPP would be a risky financial proposition. #ABLeg#dontpullout
