There's an elector for every member of the House of Representatives (435) and Senate (100), plus an additional 3 for people who live in the District of Columbia.
There are 50 States in the USA. Each State is represented by 2 Senators while the number of Federal H. O. Rs a State has depends on the population of each State. But every State gets at least 3 Electors no matter how small the population is....
3. The voting by the general public do not actually select the President directly. They are technically voting for 538 electors who, according to the system laid out by the Constitution, meet in their respective states and vote for President and Vice President...
4. Their votes are then counted by the President of the Senate in a joint session of Congress.
That is why a Presidential Candidate can win in the general elections and still not become the POTUS because of the voting of the Electoral College. Major reasons for this system are:
5.
1. The fear of factions and the concern that voters wouldn't make informed decisions.
2. Concern that States with the highest population will always choose the POTUS .
3. Others preferred the idea of Congress choosing the POTUS.
6.
Therefore, a candidate needs 270 votes out of the 538 votes from the Electoral College to become the POTUS!
So who do you think will be elected the next POTUS? 🙂
