Electrical Safety Awareness Thread

Last week around 9am my 8 year old smelt burning odour from the room adjacent to where he was.

He alerted me.

While I hunted it we sensed it was an electrical issue.

Instantly he ran and informed the other family members.
While I traced it. The rest of them were able to power off all the major appliances and pulled them out of the sockets.

Major disaster averted.
A couple of days later the nursery guys across our complex spotted a fire in the balcony of a neighbours apartment.

The residents had no idea there was a fire in their balcony while they were inside.

It quickly filled up with smoke.
After an effort of several people they were able to extinguish the blaze. Half the building's overhead tank water was used to douse the flames.
The culprit. An overheated generator that had been on for several hours. Resulted in the wires catch fire. Which spread to the switchover board.

A balcony with a geyser on.

Most importantly however was 2 large cans full of petrol ⛽.
The neighbours said they smelt something burning but thought it was garage burning outside.

The irony in their entire Time residing here as well as ours there has never once been garbage set on fire even in a KM radius for that assumption.
Once again no one informed anyone else in the building that there was a fire. Mind you it's an electrical one in their switchover connection that leads to the main building supply
Someone found an old extinguisher in the area and brought it to help. Surprise surprise it was not replenished and didn't work.

Meanwhile I have 6 in the house just 2 floors below them.
One of the people who helped got burnt on his hands.

The guy is a gardener. Neither he nor anyone who helped them were thanked for saving those folk. Nor did they even give him a few bucks for treating the burns. Someone else had to step forward.
Having fought 3 fires in this building myself previously without assistance of anyone while they were in the neighbours house and main meter room. It remains abundantly clear you are always on your own.
So stop. Conduct a fire hazard hunt in your house today. Winter is upon us and it witnesses a much larger number of fires than the rest of the year
Teach your children about safety.
Get a fire extinguisher or two or three.
Don't forget to thank people who come to your rescue.
Peace

It's just a formality now..

Went to a financial institute today 3 guards making a commendable effort to restrict nmbrs inside & to keep the SOP definded space b/w customers

Outside a queue of 20 literally a palm's distance apart at best waiting to get in refusing to stand apart
These were clearly educated folk & moneyed. The guards were struggling to keep the numbers inside the branch to the minimum. People kept shoving to get in...

Remember this is a nation that avoid using seatbelts and helmets as much as they can..
Today got this message .. its much too late now.. nearly 23000 cases over 550 deaths... too late...

But don't be mistaken the virus is here and it's going to get much worse before it gets better.. the hospitals are what will really feel the pain.. Image

Personal view point : Sindh will report larger numbers for a while to come and has thus far for one main reason. They are actively screening and tracing possible victims. The large number of flights to Karachi are and added burden.
Punjab reporting Zero 3 weeks into the first case in Pakistan is a mystery. The virus clearly knows no borders.
KhyberPakhtoonKhwa again has a better mechanism in place for tracing possible cases.

#Karachi Gas leak update 10h00.

This thread is to sift thru specualtion and fact as far as what is publicly known.

Folk a lot of rumours in circulation on impact zone and cause of leak etc.

Here is what is known as of now.
- 2 consecutive evenings gas spread and has left 10 dead and over 400 plus treated. A majority discharged. A small percentage remain critical.

- the ground zero is area near the oil terminals. Some may know the area as the point where you get on the boats for crabbing.
- depending on wind direction and speed the gas can be smelt as far as jinnah bridge. It is causing irritation to the eyes and a burning sensation in the throat as well as being an extremely foul odour (rotten eggs).

- cloth mask, paper masks are not for gas leaks.

Story time on the criminal neglect of the Fire Brigade in #Karachi and equally horrendous civic sense of its citizens. This is my story.
It's around 9PM on a weekday at a mutlistorey residential complex in Clifton when our apartment starts smelling of burnt rubber. The family quickly moves around the house to investigate and realise it's not from inside the apartment.
So cautiously we open the front door and can see thick black smoke billowing from one of the apartments. Quickly I send the family down the stairs while I scrumage in my tool box for a spanner pliers and a torch. Also grab the car keys and a cloth heading to the basement

Thot about doing a thread on growing up and living as a minority in PK since the 70s. Its been a mixed bag a lot of hate, some love and much indifference. Even a separate electorate till 2000s that many today dont know about. In the end its my home too & hard not to forget that.
Some funny moments : arrive in Multan only to be met by a worried intelligence officer who couldn't understand nor willing to accept why i had a CNIC & not a foreign passport
Arrived in Sukkur to be refused a ride to the hotel by the driver waiting with my name on his board because he was told he was to pick up a Gora "foreigner"
