Aixa Rodriguez: NY is now dealing with a hybrid plan. Teachers are trying to teach w/ windows open b/c we were told that's all the ventilation we needed. It's 41* in classrooms. It's either a COVID trap or hypothermia mill.

Aixa Rodriguez: We don't know what the plans are for the winter [ventilation in classrooms]. We still don't have enough electronic devices for each child.

Aixa Rodriguez: Some schools have put together boxes of food for students since some suffer from food insecurity. Someone did a fundraiser, raised $15,000, & bought laptops to donate to the school.

Aixa Rodriguez: They want $25 million for standardized tests while kids go with nothing.

Aixa Rodriguez: We're being pitted against each other by design. It's being done on purpose. If we don't have basic funding for all kids, it's not equitable. I think people's eyes have been opened b/c of COVID--COVID ripped the band-aids off ppl's eyes.

Aixa Rodriguez: Some of our school buildings have been needing repairs for SEVEN YEARS. They say the ventilation systems should be fixed by January but we'll see.

Aixa Rodriguez: The people who need to hear the needs of the people they don't consider to be their problem are the same ones who put their fingers in their ears & say, "La la la la la!"

Aixa Rodriguez: In NYC in particular, we have zoning problems, certain schools are labeled failures, & public schools have been under attack for years. Those with means have put their kids in private schools or moved to their 2nd homes.

Aixa Rodriguez: We have this method of each kid being a backpack of cash. Our funding shouldn't be based on each kid but on what would it cost to provide a well-rounded education to each student, teaching every possible subject.

Aixa Rodriguez: Our schools have become a crapitalistic system. The focus is no longer on giving a well-rounded education.

Aixa Rodriguez: The idea that these students, b/c they've had so many interruptions in education b/c of COVID, will be behind. Lots of kids are falling through the cracks. Because these kids aren't in the buildings, there's a 40% drop in discipline.

Aixa Rodriguez: We're not planning for ways to get these kids [who've fallen through the cracks] back on track. The ones who profit off the testing are our enemies right now. All these tests should be cancelled.

Aixa Rodriguez: We have parents pushing for changes, we've been pushing our union. We're not giving up. A lot of this will happen on a small scale since we can't gather in large groups.

Aixa Rodriguez: Here in NYC we had the governor & the mayor fighting. They were wrong & we pushed for a sick out. We pressured them to close the schools b/c it was a mess. We need to bargain for the common good.

Aixa Rodriguez: We want to make sure kids get recess & emotional support. We need to use our contracts to make sure the kids' needs are taken care of. When my students have all their needs met, they're better students for me.
