If a small thing goes wrong in my week or month, I upset someone or get something wrong or have something happen I don’t know how to speak about while doing my relatively simple, not life or death job I’ll lose sleep, be anxious for weeks, have a good cry at home, + feel ..
... pretty lonely in doing something which in the grand scheme of things is important but not that big a deal. So I do rate those who get up, + put themselves in the firing line online, in person, all the time, everyday, who then have to pretty much be perfect to not be ..
... ripped apart + even if they are will still be ripped apart, trying to make decisions, hold massive teams together, turn up with a smile + hope + energy day after day after day. When you add that to jobs where your ultimately going to be responsible for the arc of ..
... history, a raging pandemic, deathly violent division, anti blackness and racism, rampant inequality, crumbling climate, a broken media, + all the rest. Then to get up everyday to say yes I’m going to work to somehow prove myself to you, I know half of you hate me, ..
... and will tell me everyday, I know even the half sort of on our side, really dislike most of this, + we have to appeal, understand, work alongside all these views of how we go foreword knowing no one will ever be truly happy, or have the purest perfect answer, honour ..
.. all the work, and organising, and then try to find some sort of consensus, or bold decision amongst all the structural dark matter + energy that makes these decisions always huge compromises, + accountability looking pretty brutal at times with no space for nuance or ..
... the reality of the situation, nothing happening at all, the opposite happening. Within all that you got to a good partner, Mum, Dad, Aunt, Grandparent, stay fit, healthy, eat your good food, drink water, turn up every day impeccable, inspiring, holding hope ..
... I have no desire to hold any high office or power, I don’t have the mettle or the steeliness or can handle the overwhelm, or even simply the sensory overload. But, for the sake of turning a notch on the arc of history, for the sake of the challenges ahead like the meta ..
... ones, I hope I can grow some proper deep strength to not be so damn scared or paralysed by certain things + I can recognise how ridiculous it is to get anything done in this world, + the people who still try, I’m pretty convinced this lot aren’t even power hungry ..
.. their too old or going to get too much abuse just for being who they are, + still they going to turn up every day amongst the tidal wave of crap + try, as are all the people who been ploughing away at tiny different parts of the system, movement + work. I want some of ..
... that strength, resolve and focus and to shed some of the everyday fear, pettiness, and confidence that is zapped by that, because ultimately the problems are so big we are only going to make a tiny dent in our lifetimes, but we have to madly deeply insatiably ...
... believe it’s possible everyday, with an open heart and mind to grow, change, go together, because what’s the point otherwise. All of it can be true, the imagining of a new world, the working within what we have, the nuance, the problems, the compromise, the hope.
And maybe just maybe the only answer is to sit outside the system entirely, opt out, not be complicit at all in anything, not use anything, + build totally anew like many Khalsa + others are doing. I just don’t know how to do that, at all, without deep hypocrisy.
Because when I’ve unpacked most of what’s happening in those circles it’s really problematic too, really selfish, really centred on money, + dip in + abuse the system when needed like the NHS + treat those humans like shit, so I don’t know what that looks like if I’m honest.
Within all this I still want the long arc of history and all our micro contributions to move towards our most radical imaginations of what is possible.
Also this is my kryptonite because people know if they tap into my fear, and anxiety to have not got it right I’ll go round in circles playing a game I can never win, so I understand escaping our own shit, is part of how we step being part of collective working but it’s hard.
I remember a prominent leader in the sector saying I was too fragile for this kind of work or the work that will topple large entrenched systems, and she was probably right but it was still shit for a WW to say that, but I was even younger then ..
... there’s time to outgrow our fears and insecurities right? There’s time to make peace with the loss of the things you thought you’d have or were snatched right? Where do these snapshot assessments of who we are come from + what do they seek to serve?

Our default doesn’t have to be combative, well I wouldn’t do it like that, I’d do it much better, it can just be complementary or learnt from, or an example of wanting to do the opposite, different route, embrace the nuance or learn from the tactics good or bad.
Strengthening the gaps between the nodes, placing love, learning, trust, care, empathy, compassion, a bit of space for getting it wrong or wanting to take a different route. Not opposite magnets trying to prove each other wrong constantly, while the big picture gobbles us up.
Ultimately, I’m fully here anyone who is trying to put their head above the parapet towards a kinder, more equitable, just, better future, because everyone is going to chuck rocks, the system, peers, those on the same side, those driving a different outcome, + man it’s tough.

After the most beautiful conversation today with the most wonderful Dr. Lisa Palmer today, I hope today is the start of a Kamala Harris’ era we tell glorious stories of, Kamala for President & Stacey Abrams for VP in 2024? I dunno, there’s always hope + redemption I hope!
Surely her actual safety is really a worry right now? The level of attack / hate, then governing of out COVID-19, the mess of Trump, the massive challenges ahead for the world + the US, it’s easy to tweet about but blimey what a job, what a responsibility to need to get right.
I don’t envy it at all, the whole world looking to you to get it right, to turn around your past record, sitting from the sofa attacking your every move even though they might be broadly on your side, then the other side literally wishing you dead + to fail.

Some people will totally shift the window of possibility, some work on the minute detail, some that do a bit of everything, some that focus in one are, some who will go long into the future, some in the now, some huge visions, some everyday extraordinary details, some loudly ...
... some quietly, some one step at a time for a very specific goal over time, some that jump in lots of directions, some who quietly influence a few, others will move masses, none of these positions binary over lifetimes, some will introduce or reintroduce us to game changing ..
... ideas and some will keep us in line diligently with our basic values reminding of what it means to veer from them with detail, focus, some with vigour and others gently. There will be those who remind us what it means to stray too far from our basic collective humanity ...

If you are joining for today’s #NLF2020 talk, there will be lots of different things I quickly mention in the short speaking time, but this is decades of many people’s work, communities & places are leaderful, no systemic work is done alone. Here is some of the work mentioned:
We’ve worked with @00ecosystem since day one, particularly the participatory architecture element, and @DarkMatter_Labs / @indy_johar, @OpenSystemsLab / @AlastairParvin.

Key work mentioned:

1. City Endowments: nesta.org.uk/report/network…

2. Smart Commons: provocations.darkmatterlabs.org/a-smart-common…
3. Affordable Land.

4. Doughnut Economics

There are some people who fundamentally transformed the last decade for me & work that I look forward to following. Here is a little thread, of work to think about as we go into 2020. I’ll update it through the day though, feel free to add people things to the thread ...
1. My person of the decade would be @AlastairParvin, because he is smart, but with that he thinks, researches, writes, builds practical examples, is generous, shares all his thinking & doesn’t even care about attribution but just that the work / ideas get out there ...
... and people start to play with them, improve them, & experiment into the future. I think if our leaders were more like him, this decade would have been very different in the UK. He gives me great hope, from an inspiration point of view but also because he does the work ...

Five years ago today, @AndyReevo and I signed the lease on the beautiful space for @ImpactHubBrum, the Walker Building, a rich history, & beautiful restoration of the space in the heart of the creative quarter & the cities designated 'Social Enterprise Quarter', it was ...
.. expensive, & they demanded a huge deposit, but having been gloriously thrown out of Millennium Point a few months early, and with a eclectic and inspired public movement, and our huge inspiration from @impacthub_oak, we knew the time was right to start, & build our dreams ...
... we got together a deposit, accepted the rent and got going. The basics were there in the spaces, they weren't falling apart, but they were dusty, the walls weren't sealed, there was no electricity, hot water, glazing, doors or anything other than a blank canvas ..
