Our default doesn’t have to be combative, well I wouldn’t do it like that, I’d do it much better, it can just be complementary or learnt from, or an example of wanting to do the opposite, different route, embrace the nuance or learn from the tactics good or bad.
Strengthening the gaps between the nodes, placing love, learning, trust, care, empathy, compassion, a bit of space for getting it wrong or wanting to take a different route. Not opposite magnets trying to prove each other wrong constantly, while the big picture gobbles us up.
Ultimately, I’m fully here anyone who is trying to put their head above the parapet towards a kinder, more equitable, just, better future, because everyone is going to chuck rocks, the system, peers, those on the same side, those driving a different outcome, + man it’s tough.
Within this current paradigm competition, mistrust, ignorance, mistrust fills the gaps, it has to be an active effort and practice to fill the spaces with all the stuff that bridges but allows the difference + multiplicity of many imagination(s) + future(s).

If a small thing goes wrong in my week or month, I upset someone or get something wrong or have something happen I don’t know how to speak about while doing my relatively simple, not life or death job I’ll lose sleep, be anxious for weeks, have a good cry at home, + feel ..
... pretty lonely in doing something which in the grand scheme of things is important but not that big a deal. So I do rate those who get up, + put themselves in the firing line online, in person, all the time, everyday, who then have to pretty much be perfect to not be ..
... ripped apart + even if they are will still be ripped apart, trying to make decisions, hold massive teams together, turn up with a smile + hope + energy day after day after day. When you add that to jobs where your ultimately going to be responsible for the arc of ..

After the most beautiful conversation today with the most wonderful Dr. Lisa Palmer today, I hope today is the start of a Kamala Harris’ era we tell glorious stories of, Kamala for President & Stacey Abrams for VP in 2024? I dunno, there’s always hope + redemption I hope!
Surely her actual safety is really a worry right now? The level of attack / hate, then governing of out COVID-19, the mess of Trump, the massive challenges ahead for the world + the US, it’s easy to tweet about but blimey what a job, what a responsibility to need to get right.
I don’t envy it at all, the whole world looking to you to get it right, to turn around your past record, sitting from the sofa attacking your every move even though they might be broadly on your side, then the other side literally wishing you dead + to fail.

Some people will totally shift the window of possibility, some work on the minute detail, some that do a bit of everything, some that focus in one are, some who will go long into the future, some in the now, some huge visions, some everyday extraordinary details, some loudly ...
... some quietly, some one step at a time for a very specific goal over time, some that jump in lots of directions, some who quietly influence a few, others will move masses, none of these positions binary over lifetimes, some will introduce or reintroduce us to game changing ..
... ideas and some will keep us in line diligently with our basic values reminding of what it means to veer from them with detail, focus, some with vigour and others gently. There will be those who remind us what it means to stray too far from our basic collective humanity ...

If you are joining for today’s #NLF2020 talk, there will be lots of different things I quickly mention in the short speaking time, but this is decades of many people’s work, communities & places are leaderful, no systemic work is done alone. Here is some of the work mentioned:
We’ve worked with @00ecosystem since day one, particularly the participatory architecture element, and @DarkMatter_Labs / @indy_johar, @OpenSystemsLab / @AlastairParvin.

Key work mentioned:

1. City Endowments: nesta.org.uk/report/network…

2. Smart Commons: provocations.darkmatterlabs.org/a-smart-common…
3. Affordable Land.
opensystemslab.io/affordableland

4. Doughnut Economics

There are some people who fundamentally transformed the last decade for me & work that I look forward to following. Here is a little thread, of work to think about as we go into 2020. I’ll update it through the day though, feel free to add people things to the thread ...
1. My person of the decade would be @AlastairParvin, because he is smart, but with that he thinks, researches, writes, builds practical examples, is generous, shares all his thinking & doesn’t even care about attribution but just that the work / ideas get out there ...
... and people start to play with them, improve them, & experiment into the future. I think if our leaders were more like him, this decade would have been very different in the UK. He gives me great hope, from an inspiration point of view but also because he does the work ...

Five years ago today, @AndyReevo and I signed the lease on the beautiful space for @ImpactHubBrum, the Walker Building, a rich history, & beautiful restoration of the space in the heart of the creative quarter & the cities designated 'Social Enterprise Quarter', it was ...
.. expensive, & they demanded a huge deposit, but having been gloriously thrown out of Millennium Point a few months early, and with a eclectic and inspired public movement, and our huge inspiration from @impacthub_oak, we knew the time was right to start, & build our dreams ...
... we got together a deposit, accepted the rent and got going. The basics were there in the spaces, they weren't falling apart, but they were dusty, the walls weren't sealed, there was no electricity, hot water, glazing, doors or anything other than a blank canvas ..
