HAPPY MONDAY MORNING. TODAY marks the beginning of the post-TRUMP era in American politics. To the extent that he still has political currency, it dwindles every day as Jan. 20, 2021 draws closer.
Members of his own party are already suggesting his time is up. His staff is looking for new jobs. Markets are looking up, and analysts say it’s because of the expected calm in U.S. politics. In the U.K., govt officials are now saying TRUMP era was not good for them
AROUND THE WORLD and at home, TRUMP has been written off.

NOW WE MUST ALL SHIFT OUR THINKING to what the future looks like. Let’s focus this morning on Senate Republicans, who have the largest number of moving pieces.
>@senatemajldr won reelection by 20 points, &, depending on what happens in Georgia, he could return to lead a Senate Republican Conference that’s larger than most everyone expected in January. His goal in DC is twofold: exercising power, and protecting his GOP colleagues
In the next few months, those 2 goals are one and the same. MCCONNELL’S 1st charge over the next couple of months will be to pump enough money into Ga to protect Sens. KELLY LOEFFLER and DAVID PERDUE, both staunch TRUMP supporters who are trying to win in a state BIDEN just won
HE HAS A TOUGH 2022 SENATE MAP. He will have potentially competitive races with Sens. MARCO RUBIO in Florida, LISA MURKOWSKI in Alaska, ROY BLUNT in Missouri, an open seat in North Carolina, ROB PORTMAN in Ohio, an open seat in Pennsylvania, and RON JOHNSON in Wisconsin.
The LOEFFLER seat comes up again in 2022, as does MARK KELLY’S Arizona seat, which he will undoubtedly try to win. He has potential retirees in 86-year-old RICHARD SHELBY in Alabama, 87-year-old CHUCK GRASSLEY in Iowa and JERRY MORAN in Kansas.
IN THIS LAME DUCK, McConnell has to deal with Covid relief. Does he try to cut a deal with Speaker NANCY PELOSI and foist it upon TRUMP? Probably best, considering all sides are bone tired with Washignton’s Most Eager Man, Treasury Secretary STEVEN MNUCHIN, now.
Government funding runs out Dec. 11. The debt limit comes up next summer. Is it in everyone’s interest to do a big deal that addresses the debt limit?
MUCH IS BEING MADE OF MCCONNELL’S relationship with BIDEN, and fair enough, because the two do have a legislative history. But their history together is more avoiding disaster than reshaping America
SO WHAT WILL MCCONNELL DO with TRUMP and his unsubstantiated claims that the election has been stolen from him? MCCONNELL and the Senate GOP will give TRUMP room to make his case, but don’t expect that will last long. MCCONNELL is loyal to TRUMP, but he’s a realist.

Playbook: "The last gasp of Trumpism"
PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP is bending the federal bureaucracy to his benefit. Senate Republicans are taking his side. The attorney general has authorized prosecutors to probe election irregularities -- a hugely controversial move, considering there is no evidence of irregularities.
>@sendavidperdue and @KLoeffler called on the R Georgia secretary of state to resign after TRUMP lost the state. Even in statehouses around the country, Rs are investigating the election: Rs in PA, are calling for an audit, and in Lansing, they have subpoenaed election officials.

Playbook: AMERICA is waking up this morning to certainty. If you’re a supporter of JOE BIDEN, you probably feel good, because he is going to be the next president of the United States, and KAMALA HARRIS is going to be the VP.
IF YOU’RE A SUPPORTER of DONALD TRUMP, you probably feel less good, because his team is claiming widespread voter fraud without evidence, and have left it to RUDY GIULIANI to prove.
RUDY has been polling his Twitter followers for instances of fraud, suggesting he’d take their claims to court

Playbook PM: It seems like Joe Biden is going to win, as of now, so let's get back to focusing on Congress and governing, ok?

the 4 things we're thinking about:
1) WILL THERE BE A COVID RELIEF DEAL? At our last check, Speaker NANCY PELOSI was holding ultimately fruitless negotiations with Washington’s Most Eager Man, Treasury Secretary STEVEN MNUCHIN, over $1.8 trillion in Covid relief.
The talks blew up for many reasons, but the overarching dynamic was MNUCHIN kept acceding to PELOSI, which gave PELOSI the ultimately correct feeling that he was going to fold and she could keep pushing him for more. Hence the name “Washington’s Most Eager Man.”

Playbook -- IN THE HOUSE … AT 2 P.M., TODAY, House Democrats will hold their first post-election caucus call. Now, remember: Calls like this are tightly controlled affairs, and Speaker NANCY PELOSI is at the wheel.
There is significant discontent in the Democratic ranks about their miss Tuesday night -- they lost seats, instead of gaining the five to 15 they were predicting. But discontent has its way of quickly melting away in the House Democratic Caucus - and PELOSI is large part of that
NEW -- 1) THERE ARE ALREADY MURMURS among some Democrats about delaying the leadership elections to give lawmakers more time to mull over the results. Remember: Speedy leadership elections only benefit the incumbents, who have an organization and the ability to immediately go

2 THINGS ARE ABOUT TO HAPPEN:
1) House Ds are beginning to grapple w what happened . The spin is pretty weak gruel, but here it is: The polling was bad, and they lost a few more incumbents than they thought they would’ve a year ago
THIS ANSWER is going to need to improve. The DCCC is a campaign organization that’s funded by membership dues, to a large degree. They’ll want to hear why the polling was so off, and why they were being told to expect a result that never came to pass.
2) NOW, HOW DO THEY GOVERN? We hit at this in Playbook this morning, but almost any governing configuration currently imaginable will be a slog for BIDEN or TRUMP. Democrats could have a nearly ungovernable House of Representatives.

Playbook: What blue wave?

TUESDAY WAS AN ABJECT DISASTER for Democrats in Washington. To imagine the amount of soul searching and explaining the party will have to do after Tuesday is absolutely dizzying. The infighting will be bloody -- as it should be.
We fielded text after text from Hill Democrats Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning with existential questions about their leadership and the direction of their party.
Ds TOLD US in the weeks and months leading up to EDay that they were on track to win the majority in Senate, and they don’t appear poised to do that. Donors gave $90m to lose to @senatemajldr , $108 million to lose to @LindseyGrahamSC and $24 million to lose to @JohnCornyn .
