Interesting to see how @jaketapper amplified #CripTheVote just this weekend. In my reporting, this essay by Ezekiel Emmanuel has been among the most reviled in the disability community over the past two years.
Biden, as some as you are pointing out, is 77 -- two years past the time Dr. Emanuel believes life is worth living.
As @benyt has been writing abt (& I may address in a forthcoming essay), a challenge around election writing (pre & post) is a sense of proportion. One advisor does not a policy make. There are some great folks coming in on the Biden Harris COVID team.
But Dr. Emauel's position in this essay has been widely rejected in disability communities. So, mere days after Biden shouted out disabled ppl in his speech, it may be as disappointing to many of them to see Emanuel on the team as Rahm would be to lefties.
Rereading Dr. Emanuel's essay, it had never before occurred to me how much his point of view has in common with the plot of MIDSOMMAR (tho they end life at 72, not 75) Image
Date correction - this was written in 2014, not 2019
What I think this reveals, as I wrote about in my last @sciam essay, is how accepted disposability is of ppl who are elderly, disabled or both. This disposability is so accepted by so many, as @jaketapper wrote, that abled ppl don't have to think about it.

1/x Something I find fascinating in the slow-moving transition of POTUS power & COVID lockdown is a reaffirmation of how existence is RELATIONAL. No one, office, no nation, no honorific exist independently; we depend on one another for our very existence.
2/x Trump can't stay in power w/o relationships. The presidency depends on recognition of others—not just internally by voters recognizing Biden as next POTUS and opposition party (recognizing Trump) but externally by other states (already recognizing Biden as next POTUS)
3/x "The world is moving on." When the United States was formally conjured into being, it wasn't only England recognizing it which will it into existence, but it was Spain, France and the Dutch Republic willing it into existence.

No shade to ppl who are countering authoritarianism, but my read isn't that he won't leave. Yes, he'll drag his feet & GSA may balk, and this will mean work that could start January 20 could start in Feb or March (& with COVID, that will mean more death, yes. Outrageous.)

One of the things I contextualize in the essay are the concerns of many disabled ppl active with #CripTheVote about the inclusion of Ezekiel Emanuel on the COVID task force, which I first explored in this thread

These are a grotesque numbers of cops and they are wearing a grotesque amount of armor as they try to intimidate our students

On the same day Northwestern announced a new Chief Diversity Officer, I am APPALLED to see police in tactical riot gear threatening our very brave students who are protesting racial injustice.
