'We're not some demonic cult': Democrats fume over faulty messaging that cost them in red and purple states

@heatherscopepolitico.com/news/2020/11/1…
Jones: “I was fighting the same battle that Jaime Harrison was fighting, that Mike Espy was fighting, that Cal Cunningham was fighting, that Steve Bullock was fighting. And Democrats have not been able to fully counter the Republican narrative.”
Manchin: “I’ve watched the last three elections: 2016, ‘18 and ‘20. We truly should have been in the majority and it didn’t happen...Whatever our message is, it hasn’t worked. And I would hope that our leadership from the top to bottom understands that. It has not worked.“
Still, Senate Dems about to re-elect their leadership slate today with Schumer at the top. House Dems nor expected to shake up either besides DCCC chair. Biggest changes at party committees: CCM is up for re-election and we hear Ben Ray Lujan interested in DSCC @BresPolitico

There’s a reason Dems leaders aren’t leaning into possibility of adding judges to SCOTUS: they might not have votes to do it.

A growing number of D candidates in competitive Senate races say they are unlikely to support expanding the court

@JamesArkin Kelly opposes per spokesman, as does Greenfield per spokesman
Giden: "I have doubts"
Ossoff, Gross oppose
Cunningham: "Sends Democrats around the exact wrong path"

Dem whip Durbin: “We are not pursuing that at this point. At all,"
@JamesArkin Republicans say not to buy it. Their message is that Democrats will do whatever Schumer tells them after the election (Schumer has said everything is on table)

“I don’t believe him,” said Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) of Gross.

Republicans bet it all on the court — again. It might hurt blue state Rs, but other incumbents all in.

Graham: “A Supreme Court debate right before an election is good for us"

Ernst: “It’s going to help"

@AndrewDesiderio COVID spread and recession could still be top issues. But at party meeting today, most incumbents said SCOTUS is top issue in their races. Cotton warned senators not to buy Democrats' threats, and Republicans watched video of Dems saying "We need nine" from Garland era
@AndrewDesiderio Dems say closeness of ACA case to election makes SCOTUS cut more like 2018 than 2016. Warren: “The American people do not want to see Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump go forward and steal a second Supreme Court seat,”

Schumer tries to pass resolution honoring RBG. Cruz says Schumer made it partisan because he wants to add statement saying Ginsburg wants next POTUS to fill vacancy.

Sounds like Senate can't even pass a nonbinding RBG resolution
Cruz says he wants to modify the resolution and delete Schumer's language about when RBG wants seat filled. Cruz wants to insert RBG quote knocking the idea of packing the court.
A real shocker here: Schumer says no

"I think Justice Ginsburg would easily see through the legal sophistry" of Cruz
