NEW: The fight to preserve Trump administration records has begun. The day after the election, the National Archives asked the CIA for a report on Mike Pompeo’s personal email use as director, responding to a complaint we submitted. americanoversight.org/document/lette…
We’ve launched an effort to ensure that Trump appointees don’t destroy or remove key documents on their way out the door in January — & we’re prepared to file litigation under the Freedom of Information Act or the Federal Records Act to preserve documents. americanoversight.org/american-overs…
U.S. laws, including the Federal Records Act & the Presidential Records Act, require federal agencies & the White House to preserve most records & make their destruction illegal. americanoversight.org/investigation/…
We’re especially concerned because the administration’s history with preservation is rocky—so rocky that the @USNatArchives has previously warned Trump White House lawyers about the need to comply with record preservation laws. politico.com/story/2017/10/…
Recently, records from Mike Pompeo’s tenure as head of the Central Intelligence Agency, which we obtained via litigation, showed he also frequently used a personal email account to conduct government work. americanoversight.org/pompeos-use-of…
We sent a letter on Oct. 22 to NARA, CIA, and the State Department, urging them to move quickly to recover any records that may not have been preserved, as required by law, due to Pompeo’s use of personal email to conduct government business.
In response, NARA has asked the CIA to “provide confirmation that Director Pompeo has forwarded all Federal record emails from his personal account to his official account, or has otherwise provided the CIA with a copy of such emails” within 30 days. americanoversight.org/document/lette…

There are still too many unanswered questions about the Trump administration.
Education Sec. Betsy DeVos’ connections to for-profit college & charter schools raise questions about her management of the department as well as serious conflicts of interest. americanoversight.org/open-questions…
We already uncovered emails showing that a top aide to DeVos was working closely with officials at a failing for-profit college corporation as two of its schools lost accreditation. washingtonpost.com/education/2020…
The aide worked with those schools even as the schools misled students about their accreditation status and the Education Department continued to grant those students loans.
On Tuesday, multiple House committees sent letters to the White House and to more than 50 federal agencies directing them to preserve records. oversight.house.gov/sites/democrat…
In 2018, Politico reported that the president tears official documents to pieces after he’s done with them. Then a records management analyst painstakingly pieces the scraps back together. politico.com/story/2018/06/…
Our efforts to expose misconduct and abuse of power in the Trump administration have shed light on many issues.
We’re far from finished holding leaders accountable. Here’s what we’ve uncovered about the pandemic response & what we’re still investigating.
In September, we obtained a massive trove of documents from USPS that revealed a plan to mail masks to every American. The Washington Post reported the White House scrapped the plan. americanoversight.org/document/usps-…
Documents we obtained also shed light on pressure from meatpacker Smithfield Foods to reopen processing plants despite rising coronavirus cases among workers and local health department orders. usatoday.com/story/news/202…
Emily Murphy, a Trump political appointee at the GSA, has failed to sign a memo that would authorize President-elect Biden’s transition team to formally begin its work.
We have launched an investigation into GSA’s refusal to approve these transition resources.
We submitted two FOIA requests seeking to determine if the White House played any role in GSA's failure to comply with democratic norms. The requests ask for communications of Murphy, GSA’s general counsel, and more. americanoversight.org/document/foia-…
We also requested these officials’ email communications containing key terms related to the election or presidential transition. americanoversight.org/document/foia-…
The Trump administration will be over on January 20, but officials like Attorney General William Barr — who has been involved in some of this administration’s most corrupt policies — must not be allowed to escape accountability.
Here’s what we’re still investigating:1/
President Trump has sought to transform DOJ into a political weapon meant to serve his allies & punish his perceived enemies.
We've uncovered details on the extent to which Barr has aided those efforts, including the Durham investigation, Roger Stone’s sentencing & more. 2/
Our FOIA litigation revealed that Barr met frequently with federal prosecutor John Durham, who was tasked with looking into the origins of the Russia investigation — 18 times in the 7 months after the Mueller investigation ended. 3/ americanoversight.org/investigation/…
-A meeting with Sec. of State Pompeo on September 7, 2019, as President Trump and State Dept. officials were still pushing Ukraine to announce an investigation of Joe Biden’s family.
-Multiple dinners with Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump.
-An April 2020 call with faith leaders regarding Covid-19: "Give 5 min of remarks on supporting churches' rights."
