After 7 days of live-streaming people's prepared statements, the rest of the #SpyCopsInquiry won't be live streamed, apart from to a room in London without power sockets, that hosts 60 people who had to apply weeks in advance, who get their confirmations at 10pm the night before.
Other Inquires have secure systems (eg time delayed streaming) to allow public access but still protect private info when needs be. The #SpyCopsInquiry's refusal to do the same is a conscious choice, in the teeth of our protestations, to exclude victims & the public.
The #SpyCopsInquiry will be providing a time-delayed live transcription. They intend to upload audio files & awkwardly formatted PDFs of transcripts after a hearing ends.
We booked our seats for the hearing venue in London (had to be done weeks ago, going through the whole booking process for each day individually), as did @tombfowler. We will be live tweeting the hearings, attempting to provide the coverage we all deserve of this secret inquiry.
@tombfowler The Inquiry only confirmed our registration late last night (after 10pm).
NB: This Inquiry has already cost over £30m.
The room has no natural light & no ventilation. We've brought long extension cables so our devices can stay charged. Is this deliberate? Of do they just not even consider the victims & public - whose expensive inquiry this is - as worthy of consideration?
The #SpyCopsInquiry's London venue for live streaming is a Covid measure, but the original plan was for hearings in a room that wouldn't even hold half the people designated as core participants, let alone any of the public - & with no streaming.

Non state core participants were shocked and disgusted by Sir Mitting's treatment of Rajiv Menon QC today.
Menon asked the Chair for permission to ask a few questions of the former spycop who was giving evidence today...
Using the cover name 'John Graham', he had infiltrated the Vietnam Solidarity Campaign in 1968.
Today was the only opportunity for non state core particpants (via their lawyer) to ask him questions about his time with the #SpyCops
However, when Menon tried to raise some of these issues, Mitting interrupted him, very rudely, and told him that only one of his questions could be asked . When Menon asked for clarification, he was interrupted again by a visibly bad-tempered Chair.

The #spycopsinquiry has uploaded lots of documents today, including gisted summaries & what they call 'pen portraits' of various former #spycops - today short summaries of the deployments of HN218 and HN334 were read out loud
see ucpi.org.uk/publications/ for the list.

Barr explained that: some of the douments relate to 6 officers "from whom we have not been able to obtain a witness statement":
There is more information about these six in Appendix 2 of his Opening Statement: ucpi.org.uk/wp-content/upl…
(and the page numbers are indicated below)

We are starting again at the #spycopsinquiry - with a return to *live-streaming* - as Nick Stanage QC reads out the contents of Ernest Tate's statement
Ernest Tate is now 85 years old, and lives in Canada. He was living in Britain between 1965-69, and during the time heavily involved in the Vietnam Solidarity Campaign
He was also involved in the 'International Marxist Group' (IMG), and since his return to Canada, active in the trade union movement
He was asked to file this witness statement by 31st Jan 2020 [yet today is the first time it's been shared with most non state core participants]

and we're off!
Today's evidential hearing is just starting - this morning we are due to hear from #spycop 'HN329' - aka 'John Graham'
David Barr QC checked that HN329 had indeed supplied two witness statements to the #spycopsinquiry - one dated 11/04/19 and a supplementary one on 27/08/19
He asked him some questions about joining the #spycops unit - did he volunteer and was he volunteered? HN329 doesn't recall volunteering, he thinks he was requested to join the new unit (in 1968)

We are starting again.
Mitting is about to play his three minute video again, warning everyone about the consequences of breaching the restriction orders that he has made.

Tariq Ali was a member of the International Marxist Group (IMG) - a British section of an international organisation known as the 4th International, created by Trotsky in 1938, after he broke with Stalinism.
The IMG had branches in many towns & cities, including Birmingham, Leicester, Chesterfield, Manchester, London, Nottingham, Hull, Oxford, Norwich, Folkestone, Edinburgh, York, Glasgow, Reading & Crewe, & about 100 members at that time (some branches may have had a single member)
