Everything I do is built off the back of my note-taking system.

To be a better creator of any medium, note-taking will be your accelerator.

- A Thread of 10 Lessons to make you a better note-taker-
1. Reduce, friction!

Like your physical environment, make your digital processes smooth.

Install Instapaper, Pocket or the browser plug-in of your note-taking app of choice.

Whenever you see something interesting, save it without second thought.
2. Highlights + Active Reading

In your read-it-later app of choice (Instapaper recommended), now go through the saved articles and decide which are high priority.

Delete the others to keep a clean inbox.

Make highlights w/ Instapaper while commenting your thoughts
3. Readwise

This is the superpower behind the thread.

Readwise collects my highlights from:

- Instapaper (All blogs and articles)
- Medium
- Kindle (All Books)
- Airr (All Podcast Transcript highlights)

and syncs it to Roamresearch w/ automatic tags.
4. Summarization

All items coming through Readwise are tagged with "Inbox"

Twice a week, I go through, add more detailed tags, add relevant bidirectional links, and most importantly, add my own thoughts to each point.

These actions allow for info to be resurfaced.
5. CRM

Notes from each article/podcast will be associated with an author.

When I want to bring them on as a guest, I go to Roam and find all their information in the linked references.

The work is already 50% done for me.

Again, friction reduced.

Here's @nateliason
6. Evergreen Notes

An episode with @juvoni resurfaced this idea for me.

Take notes based on questions people ask or topics people commonly talk about.

Build common segments that are relevant to your interest.

These ideas will be relevant for years.

Lindy-esque
7. Idea Sex

The ultimate goal of your notes is for them to improve your thinking.

That happens best when they are connecting with one another.

Find ways that resurface similar ideas, remix them and form new ones
8. Don't make the process hard

You want to make sure note-taking works for you.

If it's unenjoyable, look for the points where there is a pain point. Each person has different styles, try handwriting notes or not worrying about tags.

Make sure it's something you return to.
9. Publishing Mindset

Publishing gives you a reason to check your notes.

This takes the form of my weekly newsletter: brandonzhang.com/newsletter

It forces you to engage with what you have read and improve your system.

What made it easier to write? Optimize constantly.
10. Prune your notes

Don't hoard notes.

Your note-taking system is an extension of your mind.

You never want your mind to be cluttered. Do not clutter your notes as well.

I just published my converastion w/ @mariepoulin

Watching her videos on @NotionHQ was what initially introduced me to the potential of Notion in managing projects.

Recounting her journey of building a business helping others manage their life & business in Notion

A Thread 👇
1/

Marie had come across Notion a couple of times, but it didn't stick until she worked on her permaculture certificate and needed a gallery.

Lesson: A project is the best way to learn Notion, just like a project is the best way to learn how to code.
2/

@mariepoulin realized that if people just took all their information from Asana or Evernote and pasted it into Notion, nothing would change.

You would have the same system. To be more productive, you need to build workflows.

Lesson: Evaluate and improve your systems

Listening to @EricJorgenson chat with @jackbutcher on @visualizevalue Office Hours about "The Almanac of Naval"

Covered:

- Process
- Compression
- Leverage
- Specific Knowledge

(thread)
1/

Who is @EricJorgenson?

Dropped out of College after the 4th year, joining a startup and moving to San Francisco.

Currently, Eric works @zaarly, a marketplace for home services

Has done everything that is “not coding,” currently in partnerships and projects
2/

How did the idea form?

Went to a startup weekend (hackathon) his 2nd year of college. Was told by a founder to read what Naval wrote on Venture Hacks.

Through Poor Charlie’s Almanac, found a lot of curated books, which was where the format of the Navalmanac came through

I now have the perfect answer when someone asks how to master content in 2020.

It's @stephsmithio's "Standing out in 2020: Doing Content Right," a comprehensive 284-page book on the topic.

Now, its $30, ($24 if you use code: brandon20) but tomorrow it will go to $50

When I started podcasting this summer, I was nervous, and the definition of awkward

Taking Write of Passage, I became good friends with @robbiecrab.

Robbie transformed my life by teaching me how to be a better speaker, and more importantly a better communicator

(thread) 🧵
1/

While in Write of Passage, Robbie and I came up with an idea to have daily writing accountability groups.

3-4 people on a call writing in silence and debriefing everyone of their progress in the end.

We tested it ourselves first.
2/

Every morning, 5 of us would get on a call and write. A 5 minute briefing, 60 minutes of focus and a 5 minute debriefing.

Even after Write of Passage ended, the tradition continued.

We introduced others to the idea as well and the community grew.

This week I was able to interview @JamesClear on my podcast.

Love both Atomic Habits and the 3-2-1 Newsletter.

We talked:

- Mental Models
- The Equal Odds Rule
- Habit's Relationship with Identity

(Thread) 🧵 Image
1/ Habits and Identity

This is the fundamental reason habits matter.

We want to lose weight, make money and be productive but the real reason habits matter is they reshape your sense of self.

What you believe influences how you act.
2/ Casting Votes

Each small action you take to form a habit is like casting a vote for who you want as you future self.

One push-up, writing one sentence, meditating one minute.

In that moment, you are an athlete, a writer or a meditator.

In the past 2 days, I helped @stephsmithio sell 61 copies of her amazing book "Doing Content Right."

For the longest time, I had doubts about selling to my audience.

- No authority
- Not niche enough
- Bad audience reaction to sales

Here's why I'm glad I powered through 🧵
1/ Self-confidence

61 sales. That's an amazing amount of support from you guys.

This was generated by one tweet thread that I RT'ed a couple times.

It showed me that I genuinely had believers and supporters who trusted my word.
2/ Connections

In the thread, I encouraged everyone who was thinking about getting the course to DM me.

I was able to make so many more connections through answering questions and learning the different backgrounds of my following.

It really gave me context.
