I always find it strange when I find books up to the 1970s. You always find the upbeat, we can do anything spirit up until 1975ish. Well what if I told you a bird can live under water? Well I was tinkering with a really cool old book I rescued from the dumpster again. This photo. 
That wasn't photoshopped. No that is real. Its not the only one of its kind either. 1964 this photo was in the science magazines. The Aqua Hamster. This was part of the "Aqua-Race" that kind of was over shadowed by the Space Race at the time. This was the technologies it spawned.
Remember Star Wars Episode I? Well the technology of the two previous photos is coming home. I am not sure of the Triton concept the last photo, but its there physio-mechanically. However the two previous photos are proven technology. Water Proof Membranes that are transparent.
The concept is straight forward keep water out, but allow free passage of oxygen and CO2. So one could make literally a box or envelope that will keep water out and air in. Pretty simple I think. Manufacturing the materials is pain, but I wonder with modern tech what can be done.
A key technology for America to open the Deep Frontier once again. Ironically there was a symbolic moment when The Gemini 5 contacted one of the deep undersea test sites nearly 600ft below the waves. Sadly it seems like "Inner Space" has been shelved indefinitely.
I propose, after the dust settles. American does a Stars, Seas, and Skies Intiative, where we ramp up massively the forgotten technologies and concepts that have been shelved or lain dormant since the 1970s. And Reach for the Heavens, Dive to the Depths, and Spread our Wings.
