UK Government Responds To #EndSARS Petition, Awaits Outcome Of Nigerian Investigations

[THREAD]
The United Kingdom Parliament has responded to an online petition signed by over 200,000 people asking for sanctions to be imposed against the Nigerian Government and police officials involved in human rights abuses.
Responding to the petition titled “Implement sanctions against the Nigerian Government and officials,” the UK Parliament said it will consider the petition for a debate, as it considers “all petitions that get more than 100,000 signatures for a debate.”
The Parliament said it was waiting for 22 days for a debate date on the petition.

Meanwhile, the UK Government also said it was waiting for the outcome of investigations into cases of police brutality in Nigeria.
Protesters against police brutality in Nigeria began campaigning for international sanctions against the government and its security agencies after security forces clamp down on protesters in many parts of the country and particularly the shooting of protesters at the Lekki ..
Toll Gate plaza in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

The UK new ‘Magnitsky’-style sanctions regime will target those who have been involved in some of the gravest human rights violations and abuse around the world.

Activists are asking the UK Government to employ the new sanctions ..
regime to impose bans on members of the Nigerian Government and police involved in any human rights abuse by the Nigeria Police Force.

In a response given on Wednesday, November 11, the UK Government said it was concerned with incidents of violence.
“We were concerned by violence during recent protests and await the outcome of Nigerian investigations into reports of police brutality. We do not publicly speculate on future sanctions designations,” the Government said ..
in a statement issued by Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

“The UK Government is deeply concerned by violence during recent protests in Nigeria, which tragically claimed lives. Our thoughts are with the families of all those affected.”
The statement added that the Foreign Secretary stated on October 21 calling for an end to the violence and for the Nigerian Government to urgently investigate reports of brutality by its security forces and hold those responsible to account.

Why Deepening Tension, Aggravating Insecurity May Trigger Insurgency In South-East Nigeria

It is difficult to miss the signs. Ominous signals continue to dog the path of peace in communities across the Southeast states of Nigeria.

THREAD humangle.ng/why-deepening-…
A strange mix of events is tugging violently at the fabrics of peace across the zone. And the elements at play appear determined to unravel an already fragile situation. It is akin to putting life flame on dry gunpowder.
There is ample evidence that the overstretched tension in the relationship between security agencies and the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, (IPOB), a group clamouring for an independent state of Biafra out of Nigeria, is already boiling over.
