There are countless, literally countless examples of Ohio's COVID-19 skeptics (in Statehouse & elsewhere) pointing to the early projections of 6k, 8k, 10k cases per day & urging Ohio to reopen based on us having not hit those numbers.
Today we have. Those projections are here.
When I wrote in Oct. about the June "Mission accomplished!" letter I wondered how signers reflected on recent surge
Author doubled down, re: those forecasts: “I’ll never forget that. We never got close to that. Not even remotely close.”
I have so many of these I'm not sure where to start. State Sen. Andrew Brenner saying "Clearly the general population is safe from Covid19" and retweeting a message saying "The COVID epidemic is over"
State Rep. J Todd Smith from May: "The projections about the impact of the Covid-19 virus were wildly inaccurate."
April 27: 35 Republican lawmakers sign the Open Ohio Responsibly Framework plan, which says about the concern of overwhelming hospitals/health systems: "In Ohio, we believe we are now past that stage of concern."
Ohio currently is setting records for COVID-19 hospitalizations
A complaint used to be that DeWine 'moved the goal posts.' Example is from Rep. Wiggam on left
Except, it's skeptics who often move the goal posts: after downplaying virus for months, Rep. Powell now explains rise in cases as "normal ebbs and flows" facebook.com/votejenapowell…
The point here isn't to insult lawmakers for guessing wrong. The pandemic has taken twists and turns throughout 2020
But that's exactly the point: this is the result of ignoring experts from the very beginning & spiking the football early. And those who were wrong remain defiant
I should say, *some* remain defiant.
Here's an example of one reversal: on the left is Rep. Dick Stein of Norwalk's Facebook post from May 1. He signed the June "Mission accomplished!" letter.
On the right is a statement his office sent me for my Oct article.
By the way, all this is separate from the other category of wrong predictions involving COVID-19 vs. the Flu. I ran through all of those in the below thread:
Ohio @GovMikeDeWine is set to address President Trump having tested positive for coronavirus shortly.
Normally does not hold press conf's on Fridays but is following the diagnosis. I'll have updates, videos, etc here in this thread.
DeWine offers best wishes for the president and first lady + all others impacted by the virus. Does a quick update on the numbers (see below), and we're on to questions already.
Just found this amazing news clipping from 1920: the original Ohio Senate chamber ceiling was made of glass, but apparently nobody noticed for decades because it was never cleaned #LateNightHistory
Evergreen
(Dayton Herald, 1906)
Apparently people in 1893 really, really hated the look of the Statehouse
THREAD: This was a striking sequence at today's press conference.
@GovMikeDeWine is explicitly asked about his refusal to call out President Trump, and he proceeds to give a minutes-long answer where he again refuses to call out President Trump.
Part 2 of DeWine answer: "I'm not here to answer every single thing the president says."
And Part 3. Solid job on the question & follow-up from @andy_chow here:
Pulled up some Ohio newspaper editions from Sept. 29, 1980 to see what was in the news the last time there was a General Election presidential debate...
First A1 headline I come across: "Klan in training for race war"
Apparently the KKK set up a "guerilla warfare training camp" in Alabama that members called Camp My Lai.
The wire reporter spoke with a husband and wife couple who had spent a year with the group away from their six children, all raised in their absence by a grandfather. Wow.
Below the fold in that Akron paper is this headline: "Cleveland busing has 'smooth' start"
The Cleveland school district had its first day of desegregated busing, with an administrator riding throughout the morning with white and Black students headed to various schools.
