Whenever we (@TheEagleOnline) printed something controversial, someone would come into my office demanding I fire a reporter or columnist. Sometimes over something tiny, other times something understandably controversial. 2/7
The thing that stuck with me was they never had a well-developed reason WHY the reporter or columnist had to go. In my office they’d argue on the fly that the article was harassment, or made the school look bad, or made their friend look bad, or, of course, it was defamation. 3/7
Seeing that the censorship instinct PRECEDED the eventual rationale made me realize something: The human mind is incredibly adept at finding excuses for censorship. Ergo, the law that protects free speech HAS to be broad. Hence, the strong protections of the First Amendment. 4/7
Good journalism tells the truth, & the truth antagonizes people, especially people with large budgets for PR. Good journalism needs protection.
