severe Tapasya to please Mahadev. In order to get imdomitable power he offered his ten Head in the Yagna Kunda.Please with Ravana's Devotion Shiva appeared before Ravana
and gave him the boon.
Mahadev also fixed his ten head & healed the injury of Ravana as a Vaidya.Hence Mahadev Shiva is worshiped as Vaidyanath here.
The 24 wheels of Konark Sun Temple are very popular beautifully balanced sculptures.
The wheels are 9.9 feet in diameter with 9 inch rim.Each one has 8 thick spokes & 8 thin spoke.The spokes joining the hub with rim are 3.3 feet in length
Out of these 24 wheel 2 wheel shows time accurately.
The distance between wider spoke is 3 hour .the thinner spoke between two wider thicker spoke is 1.5 hour i.e 90 min.The 30 beads between the thicker & thinner spokes represents 3 minutes.
If one puts its finger at the center of the axle then its shadow shows exact time of the day
the 12 pair of wheels represents 12 month of the year .and 24 wheals signifies 24 hour of a day & 8 major spokes signifies the 8 prahara of a day.
Another Architectural Amazement of the KONARK SUN TEMPLE is the Huge Chlorine slab of about 26 ton in weight is The "NAVAGRAHA SLAB"
A huge single stone containing the nine planetary gods the Navagraha.
It is a huge monolithic chlorite slab of 6.1 m in length,1.45m in breadth
& 1.43 m in height
This richly ornamented slab was originally placed over the front door of the Jagamohan (Mukhashala ).Its a wonder that how did they placed such a huge and heavy slab over the entrance gate.
Now this Navagraha slab is being worshiped in a separate temple inside the Sun temple premises .

The name of Haridwar in ancient time was Mayapur. There was a temple of Mayadevi near the city.
