+Hanchon, aux of Detroit:
I was struck by the fact that Cardinal O'Connor had recommended that McC not be advanced, and McC's letter to the pope. "His lying."
his audio isn't on, but he's talking. now it's on.
Report demonstrates the lying and deception of McC.
Unfortunate that some media have painted JPII as culpable.
+Paprocki:
Exec summary ignored facts, and those facts were ignored by media
JPII in 1999 requested review by +Cacciavillan (former nuncio) of allegations against McC. +Cacciavillan investigated and then recommended McC for Washington.
+Paprocki:
+Re concluded allegations were false.
Thus 2 most important advisers to JPII assured pope that the matter was not founded. It is reasonable for the pope to rely on his advisors.
+Paprocki:
That JPII followed his advisers should not be grounds for anyone to deny his holiness or deny his legacy.
+Brennan: We have to look at the way that candidates are vetted for the episcopacy. We've all been through it. The process is secret, partly for good reasons. But there be a time of public vetting as well.
+McKnight: Grateful for report. The Church needs to practice transparency. We need a culture where this kind of report would come naturally. We need a complete report.
+McKnight:
Laity understand there will be these kind of problems in the future.
They want a process that shows it will be taken seriously and gravely. We need to use all resources available, including expertise and skills of laity. I would like to recognize lay collaboration.
+McKnight:
We need to buttress faith in the Church and the hierarchy, and therefore consider ways in which laity could better assist the bishops in the task of evaluating people.
We should not be afraid to address the issues.
[Total aside, but it is interesting to see different bishops' offices.]
Concerned that lay people pick up more from secular media than from Church in the wake of the report. We have to say more as a conference "humbly admitting the mistakes that were made, even by us."
We can't wait until next year to issue a report from USCCB.
"Our people need much more direction from us. They're puzzled."
+Strickland: Thanks pope for "Tremendous work" on report.
"I bring the perspective of a country pastor, to really focus on sin." Report covers all of the 7 deadly sins. Turning a blind eye to sin would be a failure.
+Strickland:
McC's activity was sinful. We need to acknowledge that, "underscoring the immoral activity of McC and being very clear that there is still a tendency to turn a blind eye to sin in the world and in the Church."
+Wack of Pensacola.
We need to be accountable to each other. We are very autonomous and practically beholden to no one. Such is our vocation. We must pray for each other, build up our brotherhood, correct a brother in the wrong.
called on but having trouble with his video and audio. Stand by.
+Hebda (we'll come back to Tobin)
We should think about adults who have been abused in the Church. They don't get much attention. McC Report gives us opportunity to think about that and we should.
Cardinal Tobin: I haven't heard ppl speak about what has been done since McC allegations since 2018. We've invested a lot in measures:
+Tobin on measures since 2018:
-international Vatican conference in Feb 2019 for bishops, with victims present
-vademecum on processing grave delicts
-publications of Vos estis lux mundi (processes for dealing with allegations of abuse or neglect on the part of bishops)
#USCCB20 on #McCarrickReport
+Tobin: It would be ungrateful and "probably irresponsible" not to recognize what has been done since 2018.
And make sure people know about a hotline they can call to report allegations against bishops
+Gomez: Thank you.
+Lori:
Lori's audio cutting out. Now he's back.
+Lori:
We've heard profound and wise comments about what our response should be and is but I would like to reiterate something I said in the earlier session [bishops had exec session in private before meeting]
+Lori:
I would like to emphasize the importance of bishops committing to an hour of Eucharistic adoration daily and also to commit to weekly practice of some penance like fasting.
Through that we begin to take personal responsibility for what has happened + develop ours hearts
+Lori:
Holy hours and fasting don't cost us any money. They don't require a big program. We should be doing it anyway. And I would emphasize its importance now.
+Gomez: I agree. Thank you.
+Cupich:
Pope Francis has taken historic action with the summit, "various legislative actions," and the McC Report. "It really is unprecedented and we should go on record as a conference commending the Holy Father for this."
"It really is a watershed moment."
+Cupich:
"We have to make sure that we never again have a situation that anyone in our conference is taking sides [against] the Holy Father, or challenging him, or siding with those calling for his resignation. That has to cease."
+Cupich:
We need to commend the courage of victims. We need to spend time with victims. The more that we listen to victims and make public that we are doing so - "as the Holy Father does on a regular basis" - it will get out that we are on the side of victims.
+Nevares (aux of Phx)
Bps need to talk to, support, and encourage their priests.
"If the bishop does not take care of the priest, then who will?"
Loneliness and isolation encourage use of pornography and other sexual sins.
Bishops who spent two afternoons discussing McCarrick Report, systemic racism in the U.S., and pandemic are being criticized for... for prioritizing abortion over those things after saying for two minutes that a Catholic president who supports abortion poses challenges?
It's not that I'm surprised, it's just that I'm always incredulous.
But don't worry! The bishops are also being criticized by the very same people who have been calling for them to say something like this, since, after all, they didn't say it on the timetable demanded by the twitterati.
Chairman of committees have expressed concern in the wake of the election.
Gomez:
We are facing a unique moment in our history. The president-elect professes the Catholic faith-- he has given us reason to think he will support some good policies, but also some that are at odds with our preeminent priority of the elimination of abortion.
+Gomez:
Those policies present challenges to the common good and confusion to the Catholic faithful.
This is a difficult and complex situation. Initiating a working group to address this. Will provide more information shortly
+Gomez at USCCB: Msgr Bransfield has served the USCCB generously for 13 years. He has been General Secretary and other positions. Our heartfelt thanks.
Msgr. Bransfield:
A couple of years ago, my cell phone rang and it Fr. Steve Dougherty. He had been my pastor, a seminary professor, and was my friend.
+Coakley- bishops have advocated for the poor, the marginalized, elderly people, for Catholic schools and charities, for prisoners, and others impacted by crisis.
conference presses for "urgent relief that affects millions."
