Draft plan was adapted at the last minute to include a response to coronavirus and also to call for a stronger response to racism and racial tension in America.
+DiNardo: the journey of this document has been complex and interrupted. Thanks committee members for incorporating new elements. Commends newly introduced elements related to racism.
Ad hoc committee against racism established in Aug 2017 for a 3 year period. In Dec. 2019, +Favre requested reauthorization. Would have been voted upon in June, but the June meeting was cancelled.
Executive committee extended mandate until this meeting, and now body of bishops is asked to reauthorize ad hoc committee against racism for three year term.
Committee on Priorities and Plans recommends that the bishops approve the reauthorization.
+Broglio will take questions after formally presenting the motion for the reauthorization of the ad hoc committee against racism, for a period of 3 years.
Questions on ad hoc committee against racism reauthorization can commence.
+Stowe: I'm very much in favor of continuing the committee. But I do have a concern about outside funding. This is the second committee funded by outside sources, and if this is a priority for the conference, as it should be, we should fund it.
+Stowe: I am worried about the autonomy the committees will have or the direction they might get from some of the funders.
+Gomez: Thanks. We will pass your recommendation on to the treasurer.
No further discussion.
+Parkes now presents the 21 budget for the bishops to vote upon.
+Parkes: there is volatility in the market, but encouraging news after dramatic market decline. But market is recovering. "A remarkable recovery."
Many of our parishioners though remain out of work.
+Parkes:
Recognizing that parishes remain closed, that dioceses are experiencing bankruptcy, we are not recommending an increase in assessment. Instead, we are working to cut expenses. We have cost-saving measures.
+Parkes:
Diocesan assessment is a significant portion of unrestricted fund. Unrestricted fund is projecting a very, very small surplus in '21.
No assessment increase forecast for '22. But that will be recalculated next year.
Restricted fund budget is a balanced budget.
+Parkes will now take questions, after formally asking whether members approve '21 budget.
Bishops now instructed on how to use the electronic voting feature of their meeting in order to vote.
Results of those votes will be announced tomorrow.
The meeting will adjourn for the day in a few minutes. I'll be at the press conference in about 15 minutes, and will try to both ask a question and, if I can, livetweet the press conference.
And I'll be back to livetweet the rest of the meeting tomorrow.
Bishops who spent two afternoons discussing McCarrick Report, systemic racism in the U.S., and pandemic are being criticized for... for prioritizing abortion over those things after saying for two minutes that a Catholic president who supports abortion poses challenges?
It's not that I'm surprised, it's just that I'm always incredulous.
But don't worry! The bishops are also being criticized by the very same people who have been calling for them to say something like this, since, after all, they didn't say it on the timetable demanded by the twitterati.
Chairman of committees have expressed concern in the wake of the election.
Gomez:
We are facing a unique moment in our history. The president-elect professes the Catholic faith-- he has given us reason to think he will support some good policies, but also some that are at odds with our preeminent priority of the elimination of abortion.
+Gomez:
Those policies present challenges to the common good and confusion to the Catholic faithful.
This is a difficult and complex situation. Initiating a working group to address this. Will provide more information shortly
+Gomez at USCCB: Msgr Bransfield has served the USCCB generously for 13 years. He has been General Secretary and other positions. Our heartfelt thanks.
Msgr. Bransfield:
A couple of years ago, my cell phone rang and it Fr. Steve Dougherty. He had been my pastor, a seminary professor, and was my friend.
+Coakley- bishops have advocated for the poor, the marginalized, elderly people, for Catholic schools and charities, for prisoners, and others impacted by crisis.
conference presses for "urgent relief that affects millions."
