THREAD: @BorisJohnson your 10-point climate plan is far from the ambitious green recovery we need to protect people and the planet.

Here's a breakdown of why the 10 points aren’t enough, and what we could achieve instead 👇
@BorisJohnson 1. The Tories want to power every home with offshore wind.

But in 2019, Labour pledged to invest £83bn in offshore wind to create 70,000 new jobs and spearhead a just transition for workers in fossil fuels.

We need more of that ambition from Labour 🌬️

@BorisJohnson 2. The Tory plans focus on hydrogen as a low-carbon solution.

But a hydrogen-powered economy is decades away. A realistic #GreenNewDeal would invest in existing renewables and roll out green energy faster.

A renewable-powered economy is within reach 🌱

@BorisJohnson 3. The Tories want to “advance nuclear”, creating 10,000 jobs.
That’s nowhere near the scale of investment we need to decarbonise. We instead demand a publicly-owned National Grid that prioritises people, planet, and jobs

@BorisJohnson 4. The Tories want to "accelerate the transition to electric vehicles."

Labour in 2019 pledged £3bn for electric car manufacturing, protecting 220,000 jobs, with interest-free loans for first-time buyers.

Green cars must be sustainable and affordable.🔌

@BorisJohnson 5. The new Tory plans for public transport are weak sauce.

We are calling for free, green, integrated public transport for the many, and we want Labour to fight for it too. 🌹 ✊

@BorisJohnson 6. Johnson’s plans make no mention of a just transition for workers in aviation. ✈️

No surprise.

We’re calling for a just, fair transition for aviation that works for communities and the planet. 🌍

@BorisJohnson 7. The Tory’s retrofitting plans are pathetic. 👎

But we also demand that Labour re-state its support for the #WarmHomesForAll scheme, which would create 450,000 jobs and insulate 27 million homes.

We need well-insulated, low-emission homes for all. 🏘️

@BorisJohnson 8. Tory carbon capture targets promote a return to an unsustainable status quo. 🛢️

Carbon capture cannot be an excuse to prop up the fossil fuel industry.

We support Labour’s call to end fossil fuel subsidies. 💸

tribunemag.co.uk/2020/04/do-not…
@BorisJohnson 9. The Tories want to plant just 30,000 hectares of trees per year. 🌲

Meanwhile, we’re fighting for a National Nature Service that dwarfs these plans & will create thousands more jobs.

We believe in the right to clean air and green spaces for all. 🚵‍♂️

@BorisJohnson 10. Tory plans to greenwash finance won’t solve the climate crisis. ❌

Labour must fight for a network of National and Regional Investment Banks to invest billions in a green transformation. 🏦

theguardian.com/politics/2019/…
@BorisJohnson These Tory plans are profoundly unambitious, with no just transition for workers, investment in greener health, education, or universal services.

A true #GreenIndustrialRevolution would put climate and class justice first. The government must do more. ✊

We're asking the Labour leadership candidates five questions to test their commitment to a transformative #GreenNewDeal. They are:

1. Just Transition 👨‍🏭✊

What does ‘just transition’ mean to you and how will you plan for a rapid energy transition that works for all?

(1/1)
2. Good, Green, Unionised Jobs 🔨🏘️

How will you build on Labour’s commitment to a Green Industrial Revolution creating a million new green jobs in green industries?

(2/5)
3. Public Ownership & Universal Basic Services 💪

How will you extend democratic public ownership and universal basic services across the economy to address economic injustice and rapidly decarbonise?

(3/5)
