#BREAKING Xi said China would actively consider joining CPTPP.
As reported by Xinhua here. Xi made the remarks while attending a virtual APEC summit
Xi’s active trade engagement with Asia-Pacific comes as Biden continues to dodge questions about his economic plans in the region. An end to Trump unilateralism is obviously an impetus to Beijing’s strategic realignment with those potential US allies under Biden.

In a bombshell op-ed on @lemondefr + @handelsblatt, ex German amb to China Volker Stanzel, MEP @bueti & China specialist @FGodement ask the EU to "adapt its one-China policy" regarding Taiwan, amid Beijing's shifting rhetoric towards military unification. handelsblatt.com/meinung/gastbe…
They ask EU to:
- engage in dialogue with all major political actors in Taiwan, including those holding the highest office
- advocate Taiwan's membership - or at least observer status - in WHO & other int'l orgs
- work internationally with partners from Taiwan in the global south
- enter into a dialogue on peace, security & stability w/ Taiwan
- reorganise critical supply chains to reduce reliance on China
- improve trade & econ relations with Taiwan
- support the establishment of a Taiwanese Mandarin satellite channel in Europe.

Latest EU-China trade talks just finished. EU side represented by @VDombrovskis & @PhilHoganEU, China by Xi’s top trade aide, Liu He, who signed phase 1 deal with Trump. Key takeaways:
EU laid bare the issues yet to be fulfilled by China for the investment agreement talks:

- Market access: EU requested China to authorise exports of agricultural products currently awaiting export authorisation, as it is the case in the beef and poultry sector.
- Covid-related barrier: The EU outlined concerns about new restrictions introduced on food exports, on the ground of controlling coronavirus, leading to an increased number of unjustified inspections, controls and requests for certificates on EU exports of agricultural products.

Going through the long-awaited @UKHomeOffice policy on BNO changes. "My offer to BN(O) citizens is a very generous one," @PritiPatel wrote in the preface. "I'm not imposing skills tests or minimum income requirements, economic needs tests or caps on numbers." Key points in thread
1/ How long? BN(O)s can either apply for 30 months + 30 months or 5 years in one go. "More cost effective" to do the latter, Home Office says.
2/ Who can qualify as dependents?
- Not just children under 18, but also children over 18 if their parent(s) hold BN(O).
- Adult dependents also can apply "in exceptional circumstances of high dependency"

Beijing has occupied Metropark Hotel Causeway Bay as the headquarters of its National Security Office in Hong Kong, local police confirmed.
The hotel is a perfect spot to observe the Victoria Park, where annual candlelight vigils were held to commemorate those who died in the Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989.
Hong Kong’s public broadcaster RTHK reported that the hotel’s icon has been removed and replaced with China’s national emblem. Capitalism under “two systems” with Chinese characteristics.
