Comparing states’ rate of #COVID19 Covid19 infection: A thread
I am in the midst of moving from #Florida back to the PNW and am heading to #Oregon.
Let’s take a look at the numbers, shall we? 1/9
A comparison on Covid19
Population of #Oregon: ~4.3 million people.
Population of #Florida: ~21.5 million people.
Florida has 5x more folks.
2/9
Covid stats: #Oregon: 61,000 total covid
Deaths: 808
#Florida: 1,000,477 total covid
Deaths: 18,030 deaths
Florida has 22x the number of deaths that Oregon has.
3/9
But what if the issue is population density and not total population?
#Florida population density: 350/sq mile #Oregon population density: 40/sq mile
Florida is 8.75 x more dense than Oregon
4/9
If #Covid19 is tied to population density, #Oregon should have expected to have 488,000 total covid and 6500 deaths.
If it’s tied to population, Oregon should have expected to have 4100 deaths.
5/9
Governor #KateBrown of Oregon issued a state-wide mandatory mask mandate on July 1.
Governor #RonDeSantis of Florida has refused to issue any mask mandate.
6/9
On July 1, 2020 #Florida had a total of 169,000 cases and 3,617 deaths. #Oregon had a total of 8,485 cases and 204 deaths.
7/9
Since July 1, #Oregon has lost another 600 people to Covid.
Since July 1, #Florida has lost 14,413 people or a rate of 24x that of Oregon.
8/9
Oregon has competent and science-informed leadership in Governor Kate Brown.
Florida does not have competence or any regard for science in Governor Ron DeSantis.
Mask mandates work.
Any more questions about why I’m moving? 9/9
