The US reported +1,971 new coronavirus deaths yesterday, its highest number since May 7th, bringing the total to 256,269. The 7-day moving average rose to 1,267, its highest level since May 22nd.
The US had +176,580 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 yesterday, its 2nd highest yet, bringing the total to over 11.8 million. The 7-day moving average continued to rise to over 165,000 new cases per day.
There are now over 4.4 million active cases in the US, and rapidly climbing.

One Chinese foreign policy expert in a virtual conference I'm attending today: "This is not a new Cold War situation. This is a 1914 situation. The risk is drifting into a hot war."
Several responses: "If this is 1914, we hear a lot about what other countries need to do to prevent it. But what must Beijing do? There is a lot of commonality among other countries regarding issues with China. Maybe this suggests some of the burden lies with Beijing to change."

1. I'm hearing from people in the Biden camp that they envision a continuation of the Trump Administration's more confrontational stance towards China, on multiple fronts, but with a different tone, and a renewed emphasis on multilateralism.
2. I'm hearing from our European partners that they are increasingly in sync with US concerns towards China, but welcome disentangling them from what they see as Trump's belligerence towards all comers, including our allies.
3. Both emphasize that a lot of effort will need to go into restoring US credibility, especially in Asia, which they see as severely damaged. They say this will not happen overnight, just because Trump is no longer president.

The US reported +1,615 new coronavirus deaths today, bringing the total to 254,255. The 7-day moving average continued rising to 1,188 per day, its highest level since May 24th.
The US had +157,261 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 today, bringing to the total to nearly 11.7 million. The 7-day moving average rose to over 160,000 per day.
38 US states had over 1,000 new cases today, of which 12 had over 5,000. Illinois led the pack with over 12,000 new cases, followed by Texas with over 10,000.

Texas and California now have reported more than 1 million cases each.
