Acquisition channel of the week: Freelancing Marketplaces

@zerotousers analyzed all 489 Indie Hackers interviews and identified 34 different channels.

Can you use sites like UpWork to promote a Saas? Yes

👇
1/ He was a Shopify app developer. Building custom apps over and over. "We need a custom store locator". His clients were asking for it.

@tylertringas solution?
StoreMapper — a SaaS that you can add store location maps on your website.

Now, how to expand?
2/ "I searched job sites like Upwork for people looking to hire a freelancer to do a custom build, and would swoop in and pitch them on Storemapper instead."

Another example?
3/ ActionPages, a referral marketing SaaS.

An article: 'Harry's Shave Club open-sourced their referral campaign platform'. Meanwhile, Alex Kehaya's clients were asking for a referral campaign service.

Open-source + demand -> new SaaS platform.

Time to acquire more clients.
4/ UpWork. Companies looking for developers to work with that open-sourced platform.

His pitch to those companies? "Hey, why pay an expensive developer when you can get a SaaS and pay monthly for it?"
5/ "I also offer to build and manage the campaign for them if they'd like."

"The best thing about this channel is that the customer has already expressed interest in the service and has budget!"
6/ Freelancing platforms can be a viable acquisition channel if people are actively looking for a developer to build them something your product already does. Give them a shot.

What's been your experience with freelancing sites to acquire customers?

Tip: That navbar on your landing page is a distraction, and distractions can tank your conversions. Keep your landing pages laser-focused and improve your conversion rates by removing unnecessary links.

Thread 👇
When Hubspot tested landing pages for top-of-the-funnel (TOFU) and middle-of-the-funnel (MOFU) offers, they found that removing links improved conversion rates.
Specifically, removing the navbar, footer, and social media share links increased conversions by 0-4% for TOFU offers and 16-28% for MOFU offers. That being the case, it's pretty crazy that 84% of landing pages still have navbars.

Gumroad challenge. Day 8: pricing. @philip_kiely chose pay-what-you-want for his new eBook - Cold Email for Interesting People.

Why?
• Pay-what-you-want is simple
• Customers set what price the market might support

Other models the Gumroad's Head of Marketing also considered:
@IndieHackers 1/ Fixed Price

The simplest model. I charge $X for the product. With tiers, I charge $X, $Y, and possibly $Z for various components of the product.

• Pros: Easy for the customer to understand, lots of control
• Cons: Have to pick a price
@IndieHackers 2/ Fixed Price Increasing

Similar to fixed price, but I start the price low and raise it after every N sales until I reach some final price.

• Pros: Reward early supporters, give a sense of urgency
• Cons: Extra work, still have to pick a price

How did Tangle, a Substack newsletter, grew to $7.9k MRR?

@Ike_Saul shares some of his insights. 👇
@IndieHackers 1️⃣ He focused on getting 50-100 users out of the gate who were friends, family or colleagues that could offer feedback and I knew would be honest with him about the product.
@IndieHackers 2️⃣ He used his following on Twitter to get his next 200-300 followers, and then he just trusted my readers to help him share.

Tip: Following up with a lead can mean the difference between a sale and a lost opportunity. But instead of a blase follow-up, why not give them another reason to buy? Convert more leads by including information that strengthens your case.

Thread 👇
Russell Vaughan closes a whopping 75% of his demos, and he says the way he follows up with leads is a big factor in that. Follow-ups are crucial in and of themselves, but here's why Russell's are particularly effective.
He avoids the usual "I just wanted to follow up..." email which, as he points out, is pestering and offers no value to the lead. And instead, he takes the opportunity to provide further information that strengthens the case for becoming a customer.

Tip: There's a lot happening in the political and social arenas right now, and despite what you may have been taught, speaking your mind can actually benefit your business. Get loyal customers by standing up for what you believe in.

Thread 👇
There's a commonly-held belief in business that being vocal about divisive issues will result in lost customers and little gain.
That's true for the 800-pound gorillas (or at least it was until 2020), but one study on B2Cs showed that there can actually be a big gain for brands with small market shares.
