Sir, thank you @barneyronay for your interest to #Azerbaijan and attention dedicated to possibility of game between Welsh and Azerbaijani national teams.
Have you done your homework a little bit, you would have known that #Azerbaijan has a track record in hosting decently and on highest level possible the big-scale international sporting and other events.
Yet you have consciously chosen to pile up chaotically all the unverified allegations and distortions of history possible.
If you decided to talk geopolitics instead of football, then your readers deserve to know the following realities:
Nagorno Karabakh is not a disputed, in-between place. It is historical, internationally recognized integral part of #Azerbaijan which has been occupied and ethnically cleansed by Armenia.
These facts have been explicitly stipulated in the relevant @UN Security Council resolutions – 822, 853, 874, 884 of 1993. And by the way the July, 1921 decision was Nagorno Karabakh to REMAIN within the boundaries of #Azerbaijan.
It was yet another military aggression of Armenia against Azerbaijan between September 27-November 10 which made it impossible for the latter to host UEFA club and national team competition matches.
Using its right to self-defense under UN Charter, #Azerbaijan launched counter- offensive measures.
Yes, unfortunately it was a “bloody affair” for 94 innocent Azerbaijani civilians, amongst them kids, women and elderly, which have been killed as a result of Armenia’s rocket attacks to Azerbaijani cities removed far from the combat zone.
You think mentioning heinous attacks on Ganja serves your purpose, then let us remind you that Barda city of Azerbaijan has been a target of SMERCH missiles on Oct 27-28 leaving over 25 dead.Yet the point of it is totally different. It shows on whose side the truth and justice is.
UK Foreign Office does not advise against travel to #Azerbaijan, but warns against all travel to Nagorno Karabakh and districts surrounding it which by the way were liberated from occupation by victorious Azerbaijani army during last two months.
Rest-assured that the truce will hold strong as long as the government of Armenia decides to abide by the Joint trilateral statement.
Our purpose is not to change your point of view which seems to have been made. It is just that the readers of @guardian deserve balanced and unbiased reporting which your piece is definitely not an example of.
It would have been better, good sir, if you would have stuck to the issues that you know best – sport, although even here we think you should do your fact-check. @barneyronay
