I was in too many places at once yesterday to livetweet #HDLS14, but i’m gonna try today! i’m especially looking forward to my collaborator/roommate @ryanlepic’s keynote, @c_borstell + @fbisnath’s talk on islands (not that kind!), and @MaureenKosse’s talk on dogwhistles!!

first up today @jahochcam, Becker, & Catt on ASL Signbank (funfact: the pronunciation of julie’s last name in Eng. was variable/Germany amongst us hearings, but then my husband @mlipkin interviewed her for @MarketplaceTech & he had to ask her how they should say it (hock-sang!)

@jahochcam starts by telling us about the etymology of Signbank 🤩, & focused on the methodological challenges of capturing phonological and semantic relations, which we know are dynamic, in a static-y format! #HDLS14

@TorytheLinguist asked a great Q: how do we figure out what’s core vocab? A: This is a great theoretical+methodological Q; what’s core can also be dynamic! #HDLS2020

Maul, Maier, Tamaki found that self-reported sense of direction correlated with use of ASL (defined excellently, based on yrs in a community using primarily ASL — as opposed to more essentialist framings of lg experience 🙌🏽🎉) #HDLS14

@TorytheLinguist did a forced choice task asking how SELF functions as a copula in ASL, seeing how folks preferred SELF v null copula and SELF + w/diff types of predicates (mutable v immutable). an exciting step to figuring out how SELF is constructionalized! #HDLS14

Wager presents her thesis work on backchanneling in ASL! as an aggressive backchanneler, i’m at the edge of my couch! she found that ppl (like me 😬) who talk lots & overlappy (“high involvement”) use more “yeahs”/“rights” than “high considerate” ppl (offstage; sad doggo) #HDLS14

ngl, the sad dog trying to get in the room and description of “high involvement” (aka no chill) conversational styles is v triggering
