California just set a new single-day case high for any state at 15,442.
Only Illinois and Florida have ever reported more than 15k: IL on Nov 13 and FL on July 12.
California has never experienced the per-capita case load of the other big states.
Looking at weekly numbers, deaths rose 31% from last week, as every metric continued to climb.

Only 4 states—HI, ME, NH, VT—have fewer than 100 people per million hospitalized with COVID-19. South Dakota and Nebraska have the most people hospitalized per capita, with North Dakota, Illinois, and Indiana close behind.

Cases are growing rapidly in all four US regions. Only 3 states are reporting fewer than 200 daily cases per million people. If states follow the Midwest track, many are at risk of tripling in the coming weeks of the pandemic.
The Dakotas have seen rising cases since Aug 20. In other Midwestern states, cases have only really taken off in the prior few weeks.
The Midwest is now the epicenter of COVID-19 outbreaks, where 38% of all new cases in LTC facilities were reported this week. Nearly every state in the region hit new peaks in either cases, deaths, or both. Ohio recorded 3,123 cases - the highest of this last week.
In May, four-fifths of COVID-19 deaths in Minnesota were tied to LTC facilities; today that figure is 69%. Nationally, that number is 40%. This week, Minnesota reported their highest cases and deaths since May.
