MASS HYSTERIA
(Numbers 13,14)

Moses sent 12 men into the Promised Land.
He wanted them to go see what the Land looked like.

What kind of people are there?
Are they weak?
Are they strong?
Are there minerals there?
Is the land good for agriculture?
Do they have water bodies?...
Is it flat?
Is it hilly?
Whatever the land is like, go find out & come tell us.
They entered the Promised Land clandestinely.
They were spies, they did not want to be caught.
They knew it was a dangerous mission.

They came back after 40 days...
They faced a Judicial Panel to explain what they saw in the Promised Land.

“What we saw? We streamed it live on Instagram- didn’t you see it? We posted many pictures on Social Media! There were GIANTS there! They were at least 10 feet tall!
They saw us as grasshoppers & indeed we looked like grasshoppers compared to them!”
Moses shifted on his seat.
He was a bit uncomfortable because he had indeed seen the pictures on Social Media.
But he knew they were all fake...
The men they said was 10 feet tall was not more than 6 feet 4 inches.
The Instagram livestream had more questions than answers.
Unfortunately, Social Media is not something you can control: the people saw the videos & pictures & were already in a frenzy!
A mass hysteria had already taken over the people!
“So, you people want to kill us here!
Wouldn’t it have been better we died in Egypt?
Why has God brought us out here to fall prey to these giants?
Is it not better we return to Egypt?
Our Leaders want to destroy us!
We have lost confidence in this administration!
They want to Islamize & Fulanize us!
Let us go back to Egypt!
Things were better under Pharaoh GEJ!”

Joshua & Caleb were part of the 12 man team that went to spy the Land.
But they saw things differently...
They were not carried away by the mass hysteria.
They were more logical & less emotional.

“No, folks! Things are not as you’re seeing it! These pictures & videos were doctored! We can take the Land- there are no giants there!”

But the mob would not listen...
They threw insults & curses at Joshua & Caleb. They threatened them.
They even started a few hashtags on Social Media:
#MosesMustGo!
#MosesResign!
#MosesHasBeenABadBoy!

They later turned their anger on Aaron: Why is he still there as the Vice President? He should resign!
If he doesn’t resign, he will go down as a man who supported tyranny & stood against the people!
The people were just frustrated, throwing tantrums like children.
The irony is, they were frustrated not because they chose to believe the report of the 10 & ignore the 2...
They just didn't like Moses as the Leader.
The narrative of the Instagram livestream & CNN just strengthened their resolve against Moses.
They bandied the stories as true- even when there were obvious loopholes in them.
Many of the social media posts have been proven to be fake.
However, a few of the people chose to believe Joshua & Caleb.
They saw things differently too.
The stories just didn't add up for them.
“We can take out these folks’, they said. “We don’t believe the Instagram livestream & the CNN report!”

The mob turned on them like rabid dogs!
But rather than engage in a debate with facts & figures, with evidences & proof, they resorted to insults, curses & threats: “How dare you not believe what we believe!
You’re very stupid!
You’re idiots!
You’re mad!
You're fools!
Your children don’t deserve you as parents!
You will die before your time!
If I had a gun, I’ll put a bullet in your head!
And on and on they went.
The curses, insults & threats were so much, a few of those who didn’t believe the Instagram & CNN reports buckled.
They changed their submissions to flow with the majority.
They were Celebrities & Influencers among the people & they did not want to lose their popularity.
They get their validation & self worth from public perception, so they follow the majority opinion.
To them, optics is everything: why hold on to an unpopular opinion?
They are supposed to be “Influencers”, influencing the minds & thoughts of society. But in truth, it’s the other way round- society influences them.

Moses & Aaron were amused at the reaction.
Why the curses?
Why the insults?
Why threaten?
Why the mob mentality?
Because they chose to see things differently? Because they chose to believe differently? Because they don’t think & perceive like you?

And the LORD said to Moses, “How long will these people provoke me?
How long will it be before they believe me, for all the signs which I have showed them? How long will they be carried away with mass hysteria, emotional drama & noise? When will they learn to be objective & logical?
When will they use their reasoning ability to think things through?
When will they stop being unnecessarily emotional, sentimental & dramatic?”

And Moses responded, “LORD, have mercy on them! They are just ignorant folks who still see Egypt as a better option...
This noise is not about the Promised Land or Giants: They've always had a problem with the leadership style of Aaron & I.

When we face any challenge on our way here, their first reaction is, “If only we had remained in Egypt with Pharaoh GEJ! At least we had onions & garlic!
Dollar was N150!
Fuel was N87 per litre!
They forget they were slaves.

So when the Instagram report came & the Almighty CNN seemed to support it, they went hysterical!
Mass hysteria took over majority of the people!
They don't trust us, that is why they could say what they said:
"Is it that there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us out here to kill us?"

They didn't acknowledge the manna they ate.
They didn't acknowledge the water from the rock.
They didn't acknowledge the quail they ate.
They didn't acknowledge the Red Sea that parted...
They won't acknowledge the Infrastructure development.
They won't acknowledge the revival of the trains.
They won't acknowledge the queue-less fuel stations.
They won't acknowledge the 2nd Niger Bridge.
They won't acknowledge the fight against corruption...
As the scripture says, “They're still thinking of where they came from, that's why they want to go back”- Hebrews 11:15.

It’s all an agenda, LORD!
They want to go back to POWER TO THE PEOPLE!”

He/she who has ears to hear, let him/her hear.

Shalom…

She came to town to collect her NYSC call up letter.
I drove her to the University.
She ran into a friend who told her some stories that had been flying around the campus about her.
She was angry!
Who started these stories? They're lies!
Her friend told her who: Janet.
We got to the office where she was to pick up the call up letter.
As she was signing for it, her friend rushed in: "Edith, I just saw Janet outside! The girl who started those stories about you!"
Edith quickly exits the office to go confront her.
I watched the scene, amused...
Edith was 23.
I was 45.
I called out, "EDITH!"
She turned.
I said, "DON'T!"
I didn't say more than that.
She stared at me for a while.

Her friends were egging her on.
She was torn between obeying me or giving in to the raging anger in her.
Her friends were not helping matters...

I think you miss MENTORSHIP, ma'am.
I'm a 51+ year old architect.
I have mentors in my field, architecture.
I have business mentors.
I have spiritual mentors.
I have people I consult before taking major decisions.

I'm not sure how many youths of today have mentors...
Before I got married, I asked my then fiancée, "If I ever get angry with you, if I lose it & you feel you can't reach me again, who do you think you can call & can talk to me, no matter how mad I get, I'd listen to him/her? Who do you think I respect & listen to, no matter what?"
She immediately mentioned a name.
And whenever we have any misunderstanding, she would call him, "My husband has gone mad again ooo!" ,😁
He'd call me & reset my head.

My point is, we have people we RESPECT, people we LISTEN to, people who GUIDE us through life...

EMOTIONS.

2 stories in the Bible stand out for me.
Moses just died, after leading the Israelites for 40 years.
He was a great man.
He brought the Israelites out of Egypt, after unleashing plagues on the Country.
He parted the Red Sea.
He brought water from the Rock...
He saw God's back.
He spent so much time with God on the mountain, when he came back his face was shining.
He died in God's presence.
Nobody saw his corpse.
He just walked off & died.
God personally buried him.
He was a great man, whatever parameters used to measure greatness...
After his death, God spoke to Joshua:
"Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you & all these people, unto the land which I am giving them."
Joshua 1:2

In other words, "Moses is dead: WE MOVE!"

It revealed to me, a God that is lacking in EMOTIONS.

A 28 year old lady gets marries a 32 year old man.
She has a group of 4 friends, 2 are married, 2 are single.
The single friends are side chicks to married men.

The man tells his wife he's very uncomfortable with her friendship with such women.
It's immoral, he says...
The wife would have nothing of it.
"Stop judging my friends! You're not God! They're not under any obligation to live up to your morality standard!"

"You don't get it, do you?
It's not about THEM: it's about YOU. Associating with side chicks tells a lot about YOU!"
Hubby says...
Wifey couldn't be bothered.
"Just leave my friends alone: how they live their lives is not your business!"

Ok.

Husband let it go.
He never brings it up again.

About a year later, someone tells wifey she saw her husband having lunch with a young lady in a restaurant...

I believe Buhari is the President of Nigeria.
You say, no: it's Peter Obi.

Now, would it make any sense if I get angry & start insulting & cursing you because you're believing a lie?

You don't get angry at those who don't believe what you believe if indeed it's the truth...
If you are sure what you believe is the TRUTH, why are you triggered by those who don't believe it?
I believe Jesus is the Son of God.
I believe there's no salvation without Him.
There are billions who don't believe it.

That's their problem, not mine, honestly...
If I get upset & angry because they don't believe what I believe, there's something fundamentally wrong.
That's why those who get triggered when I insist nobody was killed at the Lekki Toll Gate incident amuse me.
If indeed you believe people were killed, why are you angry at me?
