Today, @TheWECHU is reporting 36 new cases of COVID-19. Details: Eighteen are close contacts of confirmed cases, four are attributed to community spread, two are related to travel in the US, and one is a health-care worker. Twelve are still under investigation. #Windsor#Essex
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed is doing a PowerPoint presentation with visuals to show how severe the spread of COVID-19 has become. He usually reserves these presentations for Fridays.
This month, the age groups becoming infected has shifted. Twenty per cent of positive cases so far in November have been kids ages 0 to 19.
Roughly eight per cent of infections have come from travel outside of Ontario. That's another concern, he said. People need to take precautions so they don't bring COVID back to the region and infect the community.
The number of cases coming from outbreaks has shot up. "All of these are painting a picture that we are getting cases from all of these different sources. It's not a problem that is linked to one specific sector, one activity."
Ahmed says everyone should assume everyone they are meeting is infected and protect themselves accordingly to prevent COVID-19 from spreading.
BREAKING: The number of cases at Begley school is now up to 39 from the 26 reported yesterday by @gecdsb. Two of those are probable and not yet confirmed. 29 are students and eight are staff. A staff member is the index case (brought it to the school).
He says he and @TheWECHU are not fear-mongering. All of his decisions and actions are evidence-based.
"We want to make sure... we are protecting everyone. We are close to the finish line," with vaccines on the horizon.
The school @BegleyBroncos1 closed last week. Roughly 430 staff and students sent home to self-isolate for 14 days after 3 staff tested positive. Now, 283 students, 74 staff members, and 141 family members of those involved have been tested w/ 39 positive or probable.
Slight correction to this tweet. The index case is not the person who definitely brought COVID to the school, but the person who the health unit has determined did spread it to multiple individuals. Ahmed said WECHU doesn't blame any one person.
