Mega-winners are often the 'top dogs' in their industry

Finding them early is HARD

Here are7⃣signs you may have found one

⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
1⃣Hard to categorize

$TSLA wasn't a traditional auto. No dealers. DTC sales. All electric. Didn't fit the mold

$NFLX was DVD-by-mail. No retail stores. Weird!

Some follow Blue Ocean Strategy - Create NEW markets

Ex:
$BL real-time accounting
$NVCR electric fields treat cancer
2⃣Product/service is a HUGE improvement over what exists today

$ISRG -> Robotic surgery - increases precision, less scaring

$ALGN -> Clear braces - removable, can't see them

$PODD -> Tubeless insulin pumps - no wires!

$DXCM -> Continous glucose readings

$NNOX ?
3⃣Smart backing

$SDGR -> Bill Gates

$SPCE -> @chamath

$SFIX -> @bgurley

Great companies often have great VC partners

I love to invest alongside

Andreesen Horowitz
Baillie Gifford
Benchmark
Kleiner Perkins
Lower Case Capital
Sequoia
Y Combinator

Etc
4⃣Strong balance sheet

Lots of cash, no debt

Great businesses often trade at huge valuations, giving them easy access to capital

Cash = optionality

(Sometimes the business is SO good they reach profitability fast like $TTD)
5⃣Moat building

You can see a moat being created

My fav is a network effect $FB, $MA but that's rare

High switching costs $SHOP

Brand $LULU

Distribution $JD

Low-cost production $IPGP

Counter-positioning $NNOX

The more the company executes, the wider it's lead
6⃣Management talks about the product & opportunity, not the stock

You want leadership focused on making a great product and building a great company, not simply trying to create short-term hype
7⃣Great place to work

Great companies attract great employees

Great employees create great products/services

Great products/services attract great customers

Great customers create great financials

Great financials create great stocks
What signs do you look for?

And what companies fit this mold today?

-- Warren Buffett

"Every day, self-proclaimed stock market 'experts' tell us why the market just went up or down, as if they really knew.

So where were they yesterday?"

-- Anonymous

"If stock market experts were so expert,

they would be buying stocks,

not selling advice."

1/ If I woke up broke (thread)

Interesting thought experiment -- what would you do if you woke up with $0 net worth (or negative)?

Here's what I would do

⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
2/ I'd start by slashing all of my costs TO THE BONE

Restaurants - gone
Subscriptions - gone
Vacations - gone

ALL costs -- fixed and variable -- would be reduced as much as possible

All food would be made at home

All fun would come from free sources only (dark green)
3/ I'd focus INTENSELY on boosting my income

All waking hours would be used towards increasing income, especially overtime/bonuses

Free time would be spent on side hustles

Taking care of animals sounds good to me!

1/ How to find insider ownership (thread)

Go to the SEC EDGAR database sec.gov/edgar/searched…

Enter the stock symbol in "fast search"

Let's use Mark Zuckerberg from $FB as an example

Click "Insider transactions for this issuer" (see image)
2/ Click on the insider's name

In this case, Zuckerberg Mark

You can also search for "CEO" if you don't know their name
3/ Click on the most recent Form 4 for the insider

1/ When to sell (thread)

Selling is harder than buying

I rarely sell, but that doesn't mean I don't ever

Here are the 11 reasons I will sell

👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇
2/ Thesis Busted

If I was wrong about the company, I will sell

In the past, I've been wrong about:
+Brand deteriorates $UA
+Moat $GRUB
+Outside forces $KMI

Other reasons:
+Company being disrupted
+Management can't execute
+Legal rulings

I was wrong = sell
3/ Account Irregulatires

If I can't trust the numbers, how can I make ANY decisions?

There's NOTHING that $LK can do to convince me to buy now. That company is dead to me forever.
