...but it's because of a virus that poses an unprecedented level of danger, because of easy travel...and health bureaucrats say so. That's why travel is restricted and the health bureaucrats (and the governors etc. who employ them) now function as dictators.
We're just slowing the spread. That's why we wear masks and follow curfews. It won't stop it, but yes, it will slow the spread.
And sure, it can be expected to blow up into a dark winter which will cause mass extended lockdowns everywhere, but that will be reasonable too.
Everything will go back to normal after the vaccine is here. Well, you'll need regular vaccines, because this virus doesn't respond the way vaccines normally do. We've known that since we didn't have a vaccine. Come on, keep up.
But actually...
I mean, OK, it will be a "new normal," not the bad old normal that let over a quarter million people die. Look, we've had enough of Trump and his crazy followers' deadly notions of "freedom." Yes, in the new normal, we might have lockdowns, masks, etc., but we need them.
Everybody says we'll "build back better," that's the slogan on lips around the world! I'm excited about that! Who cares if there are fewer people working, if we are distanced from each other, increasingly monitored, told what to put in our bodies, etc.
That's worth it, because there will be fewer cars on the road, and most importantly, fewer people dying with Covid-19! Don't listen to the fake news and conspiracy theorists who tell you suicide and poverty will cause more deaths, and that freedom is important. It's not true.
I for one am very excited to start taking the vaccine, *and* I'll keep wearing the mask and won't complain if it's required, because I know that (unlike past vaccines) this vaccine won't actually be effective for long. We'll need regular boosters. That's normal, right? Sure.
What are all you people are so suspicious about? You should just trust our governors, health administrators, and other authorities. They have our best interests at heart, and they're a lot smarter and more unselfish than all the "freedom-loving" "patriots" who disagree with them.
So I for one welcome the quarantining and immobilization of the healthy people of whole states to slow deaths "with" a virus, even if the death rate is a small fraction of what it was last spring!
The long-awaited—and let’s face it, really late—Librem 5 Linux smartphone was shipping as of five days ago. This is the so-called Evergreen batch, meaning the biggest bugs are supposed to be gone and the thing is now in mass production. $799.
Press release
Hint to journos: this is big news. It’s shocking that nobody covered the story. It’s a true privacy-respecting alternative to Android and Apple!
No, not magic. Just what happens when your phone runs a real computer operating system instead of a walled garden that deliberately makes communication with your work machine hard.
I can't prove that any significant amount of email censorship is happening today, by the way. I doubt there is much, at least not in the U.S. But is there a desire for it? Is it on the horizon? You bet.
Ugh. The Ohio House voted 58-30 to limit DeWine's authority to impose a new lockdown. This is bad news because it's just short of what was needed to override DeWine's inevitable veto.
This means that we might well have another lockdown.
So, Gov. @MikeDeWine, are you really going to shut down (and inevitably kill many) state businesses over the will of an overwhelming majority of the people and their reps?
Doesn't that constitute tyranny, especially when you aren't even negotiating with legislators?
Bully.
Someone kindly pointed out to me my mistake. I thought 98 votes were accounted for. No. 88 votes were accounted for, meaning 11 people didn't vote. D'oh!
58/88 = 65.9%
That's well over the 3/5 majority needed to be veto-proof. Looks like we win after all!
🚨 OHIOANS! 🚨
Please urge your #OHIO STATE HOUSE REP to vote FOR SB 311. The Senate passed it with a veto-proof vote (20-13). The House must do the same!
Call NOW. The vote is this afternoon. Crash their phone system! Find your rep's phone number here: ohiohouse.gov/members/distri…
Hi Rep. @realJeffLaRe—me again. Hoping you vote the right way this afternoon. Enough is enough with the out-of-control technocracy, I say. Back to government by our elected representatives!
To #Ohio Gov. @MikeDeWine: I'm Dr. Larry Sanger, Wikipedia co-founder. I'm an Ohioan.
1/ I'm beyond being polite. I demand that you clarify the precise conditions under which all our freedoms will be restored. It's sickening I must ask this.
When will we be free again?
Answer!
2/ The removal of *basic civil rights* without adequate explanation or any indication of when it will end is tyrannical.
Are death rates increasing? No. The number of "confirmed" cases is, but the death rate is doing a random walk around levels reached last May.
3/ I'm not denying there is a deadly virus, that it is an epidemic, or that it is growing right now.
I am denying that it warrants silence on protecting our basic civil rights and liberties as Americans. I repudiate the notion of a "new normal." Why the silence? Clarify!
