One day ahead of this big protest, a key figure ‘Toto’, leader of protest guard volunteers We Volunteer (WeVo) was arrested under arrest warrant for sedition & computer crime for a protest in August in Udon. ‘Toto’ has been taken to Udon. #ม็อบ25พฤศจิกาmatichon.co.th/local/crime/ne…
10 hours ago @ThammasatUFTD announced change of protest site from Crown Property Bureau to SCB headquarters to avoid clash with #YellowShirts prepared to block pro-democracy protests.
*Correction: Toto has been taken to Ubon, not Udon.
Prayut said in June that the King wished that Section 112 not to be used again. Yet, now at least 7 protest leaders are to be prosecuted with #LeseMajeste.
On 23 Nov, authorities installed street signs #เขตพระราชฐาน (Palace Area) around the Crown Property Bureau. Thai law on public gathering prohibits protests within 150 meters of palace areas.
Interestingly also, a Chula law professor gives an opinion on FB that “Ladawan Palace” (location of CPB) does not qualify as “palace area” under Article 7, as it is neither a royal residence nor belongs to royal heir or key royal members (HRH level).
‘Penguin’ carries a street sign #เขตราษฎร (Citizen Area), a play on newly installed #เขตพระราชฐาน (Royal Palace Area) signs around Crown Property Bureau, the original protest site that is heavily fortified today despite change of protest site to SCB HQ. #ThaiProtests2020
Meanwhile, police apologize to the public for massive road closure in Bangkok (horrific traffic today), adding that police “already expected” protesters would come to SCB headquarters.
A reminder of effects of chemicals-laced water from water cannons. Photos of a protester suffering from the effects, who has been hospitalized since 17 November protest.
There are questions regarding the legality and proportionality of such measure by police. #ThaiProtests2020
Police response to media on use of LRAD. Of course, police also said their use of water cannons 👆🏼 was “according to international standards” as well. Same as Prayut arguing there’s “rule of law” in Thailand. #ThaiProtests2020#ม็อบ25พฤศจิกา
Apparently “Ratsadon banknotes” with picture of a regal duck were distributed at the protest today. The duck money can reportedly be used to buy food from “the CIAs” (vendors) at the protest. #ThaiProtests2020#ม็อบ25พฤศจิกา
Whether the ongoing #ThaiProtests2020 will achieve the goals remains to be seen. But so far the movement has made a significant impact on Thai social and political discourse. The issue of monarchy and crown property is now being openly and directly discussed on mainstream media.
The issue of Crown Property has been featured by major outlets like @Thairath_TV and @ThaiPBS. Editor of @sameskybooks (the publisher raided by police weeks ago for publishing monarchy-related books) was invited to a debate on the hottest Thai Rath TV show.
This article by @workpointTODAY explains Crown Property, how it came about, how royal assets were managed under absolute monarchy, how that changed and was invested in Rama 5 reign, how it was managed in Rama 9, and how it changed again under Rama 10. workpointtoday.com/explainer-10/
6 pro-democracy protest guards were shot towards the end of Nov 17 protest. Last night another 2 were shot.
Reports of both incidents have been described as “clashes” or “conflict between rivals”. Choice of words is important. How about “agent provocateurs”? #ThaiProtests2020
Thai Rath TV issued an apology for (presumptuously and incorrectly) reporting that the shooting at the end of the protest at SCB last night was a fight between rival gangs of vocational students.
I was going to ask about companies with their names and logos on the shipping containers used as barricades against pro-democracy protest in Thailand today.
#ThaiProtests2020 are truly led by youth, the country’s future. But this is how they feel about the current Thai society. A view of high school girl from a poor region, Isan. #WhatsHappeningInThailand
❤️ Love a cultural story like this. Thai protesters have been joking about how the food vendors, esp. the meatball sellers, are always first at the scene of any protest site. Hence, the nickname “CIA.”😎 Here’s their secret. #WhatsHappenningInThailand khaosodenglish.com/life/food/2020…
