me: people with ADHD aren’t *literally* distracted by random squirrels, that’s just a simplistic stereotype. A caricature, really-

also me:
"oooh, a light thingy" – 30 year old adult male
this guy Oleg Vladimirovich Losev invented LEDs decades before everybody else (in the 1920s) but nobody cared. he was a lonely nerd with no co-authors. wrote to einstein but didn't get a reply

web.archive.org/web/2011051113…
LED is a $54B/yr industry, forecasted to reach $90B+ in the next few years
ha this is interesting – the article/pdf was published in April 2007, and at the time they wrote "predicted to exceed $15B per year" – they were right! in fact it was an underestimation!
oh man, Losev died of hunger – starved to death during the blocade of Leningrad, aged 39

F

what could he have done with a little support and a little more time

"unknown and uncelebrated, this should've been the beginning of the photonic telecommunications revolution"
this familiar fren is called a Seven Segment Display

3rd pic from a patent in 1908 (Frank Wood)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven-seg…
7-segment lets you do all the numbers, but you can't do all the letters

then there's 14-segment displays, and there are also less common(?) ones like 9-segments
got me curious now about all the things I may have owned with LED displays, like whatever digital watch I used as a teenager
thinking also more broadly about the ways in which the constraints of new mediums influenced typography and fonts. brian eno guitar quote etc

friend: I told my therapist about your tweet and he liked it so much he said he’s going to start using it himself

my brain: this is why I don’t need therapy. I don’t do therapy, I *am* therapy

me: see it’s precisely this sort of hyperbole that makes our friends worried about us
brain: it’s all fun and games until the genius reveals himself huh

me: wtf are you talking about

brain: nothing... I wouldn’t expect a mortal entity to understand

me: I’m keeping an eye you

brain: everybody does

me: they do not

brain: pls let me go full kanye

me: no
brain: you never let me have any fun

me: excuse me!! you have a lot of fun

brain: ugh fine but I want more

me: ok let’s make a deal. let’s get some productive work done. then you can be a little kanye, as a treat

brain: hmmmm

me: yes?

brain: no deal

me: goddamnit

Interesting thing going on here

1. an artist gets 3k RTs for gushing about receiving an order for $900 of prints

2. some other artists plug their own stuff in the replies, presumably hoping to get big orders too

3. some people have a problem with this ImageImage
I have a range of semi-conflicting thoughts about this

I love art and artists and they should get paid

I think self-promotion can be an art form in of itself, and most people - artists in particular - aren’t typically very good at it

the sin is tackiness and bad aesthetics
I’m pretty comfortable identifying as a self-promoter

yet you may notice I don’t actively tell people to buy my ebook or subscribe to my youtube channel super often - I do those things about once a month. I’d probably make like 2-3x more money if I did it about once a week

thinking about my consumer behaviors
as a general rule I don't like to be sold things; earlier today a couple of girls came to my door to try and sell me some coupons for a new food delivery place. I'm like nah, I don't buy such things on the spot. they didn't leave me a pamphlet or anything tho. I like to read
I generally hate to try new apps of any kind. if you want me to try your app you have to go through an extremely lengthy process to persuade me. for context, conaw tried to sell me on roam for about a year at least and I ignored him the whole time until vgr started using it

I've kinda faced a less brazen version of this, where

1. some dudes think I'm a dingy basement rat who has to beg for crumbs of attention

2. others think I'm too conventionally attractive (and must always have been) to have any useful perspective on social dynamics
I think the thing that explains all of this is that status regulators don't really care about the reality of how things work.

here's the fun part: if you do anything that violates the regulations, they will try to put you down with insults ***derived from the social order***
which is to say, they don't actually have a system for processing "the violator is unaffected by us calling them names that we would find deeply shameful and upsetting". It's very entertaining to watch them get confused by this
