The idea that coronavirus lockdowns are insidious plots to seize power at the expense of personal liberty is an unfortunate cope. The politicians of Western liberal democracies are too incompetent, venal, and simply lack the will to power to actually carry out such a grand
conspiracy. Rather the lockdowns are a culmination of long term trends in the Western body-politic; doing something pointless and probably self destructive as bureaucratic cover your ass to dodge any potential of being held responsible all to avoid having to take decisive action.
Closing down shops and restaurants and evening curfews are the security theater of pandemic response. Disruptive and pointless, but easy to do via bureaucratic channels. Actually infringing on individual liberties through mass centralized quarantines and contact tracing that will
end a pandemic is hard and politically risky and will require the exercise of state power beyond legal games that politicians normally play.

The Yihewani is at heart an Islamic "reformist" movement and historically religious "reformism" only meant more sectarian and fundamentalism, like 16th century Protestantism. Their desire for religious purity untainted by social, cultural and historical constraints is bad for
social peace in general because it reduces everything down to a conflict over fundamental values. The choice in architecture styling is deliberate, declaring it to be a bastion of Islam in China rather than Chinese Islam. They want to strip out the local flavor for a more pure
version of Islam that they feel exists in the middle east. This has occured in the past before among the Hui and all it amounted to was intra-Muslim sectarian strife followed by rebellion by the purists followed by ethnic cleansing. Smashing down Islamic purity spirals should

There is actually an interesting parallel between Chinese dissident liberals and the Anglophone Indian elite that I think many are unaware of. They are both from classes of great socio-economic privilege, extreme Anglophiles, and utterly out of touch with the mainstream of their
own societies. The greatest difference is that the Anglophone Indian elites have historically ruled India and still continue to dominate it's upper class via prestige while the Chinese dissident liberals are a tiny despised minority who have never had any power whatsoever. Also
while the Indians are merely out of touch with their own society, they are extremely adept in navigating the cultural trends and patterns that dominate the West. The Chinese dissident liberal is a true political and social orphan. Not only is he in dissonance with his homeland

The intellectual retreat of Liberalism is a global phenomenon. It's success in hindsight may have been contingent on the unprecedented affluence of Western societies from the decades following ww2 to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Stagnation and decay

for the last two decades have lead many to challenge previously assumed universals. For China, the shift was not because of immiseration, to the contrary the last two decades have witnessed unprecedented prosperity, yet the values of China's intellectual boomers, those who most
slavishly aped the West in all things have been left behind by the Chinese mainstream who have developed a civilizational self confidence engendered by strength that the eunuch compradors who simply lacked the balls to comprehend. To a class, those who rage against the Party's

Journalists... Every single time. I'm reminded of @dylanleviking tweet about just how deliberately myopic English language translation of Chinese is. Cultivated ignorance of what is actually relevant to favor what panders to their priors. The raft of usual suspects with their
Twitter bios filled with descriptors such policy analyst, research fellow, indo-pacific, the whole stew of DC funded acronyms are leaping to this man's defence. This is actually how elite concensus is created in the West, various government paid shills circle jerk one to create
an established cannon even though the fundamental premise is nonsense but because everyone possess the right affiliation or credentials, it has to be true. Like the pile of ants gradually swarming to their deaths in a tight circle because they've lost the scent, except in this

What American "weakness" actually means and what people think it means. There is a great divergence here in definitions that is critical to understanding balance of power relations and Chinese perceptions of American vulnerability that I think Americans simply do not understand.
This is particularly notable when reading what the DC strategic circus has to say about the topic, whether from the left or right since there is actually marginal difference here. When some interchangeable think tank, journalists, or bureaucrat in the security services writes
about American weakness, they are actually primarily deploying it as a rhetorical weapon against domestic weakness, because what they are not actually analyzing is American capabilities, but rather the meta-coherence of the wide American propaganda network. When the DC blob

"Why aren't the Islamist head hoppers we have been cultivating for decades biting the targets we want anymore?!" cries the Anglo Imperialist.
The real answer is that China doesn't have troops occupying random Muslim nations nor does it gratuitously insult Muslims while simultaneously pandering to them. It's a simple thing called respect. You can kill a man, but to humiliate is even worse. Liberalisms inability to deal
with sectarianism or it's burdensome Muslim minorities arises from the fact it mistakes symbolism for action. It routinely insults and degrades Muslims because it is unable to truly rule them. Mohammed cartoons and similar stunts are puerile and serve no purpose beyond incitement
