When I worked on a report on the origins of violence in the north last year was when I lost all sympathy. They actively incubated a monster that is beyond being tamed now.

I'm going to reveal something in this thread that I guarantee most of you have never heard of before.
Are you aware that those in charge of northern Nigeria's political Islam establishment spent decades pacifying their horrendously poor constituents by promising them the land belonging to northern Christians once Sharia was implemented?

Let me give you a background.
Due to monogamous marriage which limits their population expansion, northern Christian land inheritance is largely linear, i.e the number of descendants fighting to inherit land from the father is limited, which gives them economic leverage in an area where land is the only asset
Northern muslims on the other hand, have extremely diluted inheritance because the patriarch can have 4 wives and 17 children, 8 of whom might be male. Simply put, there is not enough land to go round which leads to extreme wealth disparity within Muslim areas.
This is why Sharia was championed by northern political actors and enthusiastically welcomed by northern proles - it was a bone for politicians like Yerima to throw to the masses, and the masses genuinely believed that land belonging to the 'arne' would be distributed to them.
Sharia came, and the promised expropriation and redistribution didn't materialise.

Bear in mind that young northern men, contrary to popular belief, actually want more from life than poverty and ruin. The promise of taking over arne property was a REAL source of hope for them.
Ustaz Mohammed Yusuf, a charismatic preacher in Maiduguri saw this groundswell of resentment and took advantage of it, cultivating his Salafist group into a political force in Borno state.

Boko Haram as at 2007 actually nominated a commissioner to the Borno state cabinet.
The disagreement came when Governor Ali Modu Sheriff refused to follow through on his (politically expedient) promises to Boko Haram, including seizing land belonging to arne and distributing it to economically disenfranchised young Muslim men.
Yusuf went rogue and in July 2009, the Nigeria Police Force got involved the only way it knows how to, extrajudicially executing him in full view of everybody outside the Maiduguri police HQ.

Yusuf's deputy, Abubakar Shekau then took over.

And the rest is history.

The truth is that it was this legendary Northern Nigerian hypocrisy and penchant for deceit that made some of us (self included) doubt that Chibok actually happened.

Because the Arewa I know is capable of staging such an event just to score political points.

They have NO SHAME
It wasn't until Dr. Oby and a few credible people got involved and provided evidence and documentation that I believed that it even happened.

I always take anything coming out of that place with a plate of salt.

Their entire culture is built on lying and deceit.
It is a culture that literally has no redeeming feature, and will inevitably eat itself as it is already doing.

There is no way to "reform" it because it contains nothing worth salvaging. And since they will never renounce it even if it kills them, it probably will.

Frankly, if you can't be questioned or get dragged without busting out the "But I'm rich and I'm trying to help you, how dare you?" stuff, you should sit in a corner and mind your rich business.

Some of us have sacrificed everything without whining. What do you want, a lollipop?
As at November 2018, I had my comfortable $3,000/month gig and the blessing of anonymity. I could have spent the past 2 years around Lagos and Abuja having the time of my life.

I reduced my hours (and income) so I could pivot into Nigeria and grow a voice here.
Nobody forced me to do it and I didn't expect applause from anyone. I moved from divorced playboy and Tinder legend to a paranoid journo without a fixed address after making enemies out of Elumelu, Dangote and Adenuga.

Should I expect a cookie for that? Who forced me to do it?

What Oloye has unwittingly established now is that Nigerians engage with social/political leaders like Kpop stans engage with their stars.

As long as they like you, any attempt whatsoever to question you is haram, and the questioning infidel must face the wrathful Twitter jihad.
Critical (or even aggressive) questions are only for people we don't like. If we like you, like we liked Reformed Democrat in 2015, you will get away with murdering 347 Shias for allegedly "touching a general's chest."

The cycle is repeating itself once again.
The puzzle finally fits together inside my head because I kept on looking at everyone in 2015 and 2016 wondering why they were letting Buhari get away with all kinds of msunery, only to suddenly start complaining in 2018 about things he'd been doing for 3 years.

No wonder.

The one whom I had an altercation with at the start of the protest and we blocked ourselves, I sent a mutual acquaintance to her to hold an olive branch because young people must learn to put their petty egos aside and work together and all that.

Lol
Babe told him to tell me to "Go fuck myself."

These are the power drunk, clout hunting, spoiled children with oversized egos you think you have found leaders in.

George Weah/Bobby Whine/John Magufuli all over again.

We'll be here for the inevitable years as always.
And then one oloriburuku will now tag my handle and say "But David said this thing that time."

By the way, this is neither an endorsement nor criticism of anyone, just a statement of fact:

Those "billions" you see next to Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk's name are hypothetical. They exist in (perceived) stock value, not in cash.

Elon might not have $10 million in the bank.
Also whatever cash pile rich Americans have is not used the way Africans use theirs, always remember that.

They keep their money active in their economy, creating jobs and wealth for everyone.

We remove ours from our economy and park it like salted fish. Our fault, not theirs.
After making billions, Steve Balmer, Bill Gates, Paul Singer etc set up venture capital and private equity firms to fund new innovation and create new wealth for Americans.

After making billions, Dangote wants to transfer his profits abroad and Uzo-Kalu wants to buy Arsenal.

When we get to the constitutional reform part of #EndSARS, I hope we will understand why social and economic freedom (both "freedom from" and "freedom to") are such key elements of ALL successful societies on earth, including China (which is functionally freer than Nigeria).
Successful societies do NOT just go around giving their uniformed personnel all sorts of absolutely unrestricted power to intervene at will in people's lives at any time and without any sort of process.

It is that military holdover that created the culture of SARS in Nigeria.
I used to sometimes wake up at 3AM on a Saturday morning in Bradford, get into my car and randomly take a roadtrip to London or Southampton just because, and NOBODY ever asked me any questions.

Such freedom is central to creativity and ingenuity which boost economic growth.
