Not just the British, even other Europeans used to refer #Hyderabad as Bhagya Nagar/Bhagnagar #Bhagyanagar

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) website has this on Hyderabad history

"The city was originally called Bhagyanagar after Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah's wife Bhagyamati"

Marxist and Islamist historians are not in favor of this theory for their own reasons.

Marxist and Islamist historians aren't willing to accept the theory of "Bhagyamati" being one of Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah's wife because it gives legitimacy to the name #Bhagyanagar

I am not a trained historian or a history expert to comment on the veracity of "Bhagyamati" being one of Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah's wife but it raises many interesting questions and theories. #Bhagyanagar

Both Hyderabad and Bhagyanagar does not exist on the maps, it would be either Bhagyanagar or Hyderabad.
