I’m in court this morning as a witness for the Coroner’s historic Inquest in the killing of Andrés Guardado by a Compton Sherrif. These videos are a key piece of evidence. Word is the shop manager, Andrew Haney, who I interviewed here, has disappeared. #andresguardado
Update: Deputy Miguel Vega, who shot Guardado, is out of the country. He intends to submit a declaration in lieu of testifying invoking the 5th. His partner, Hernandez, submitted a declaration invoking the 5th. Detective Davis, the on-site investigator, is invoking the 5th.
Homicide Investigator Joseph Valencia is also invoking the 5th.
The Sheriffs have provided evidence in a sealed file. It is not allowed to be viewed by the public, only by the judge. After the judge views it, it will be returned to the Sheriff.
Judge is questioning if it’s appropriate for investigators to invoke the the fifth. She will be seeking further advice on this.
Dr. Omalu, an independent forensic pathologist who performed a 2nd autopsy on Andrés testified that his opinion is that the death was homicide. Investigation is not over, needs Sherrifs’ docs, but he feels that regardless what is in those documents, it won’t change his findings.
The hearing has adjourned, judge says she will be looking to see if the officers and investigators are protected under the fifth amendment and will look to schedule a second inquest. There are still outstanding subpoenas for witnesses.
Since this is getting some new eyes, I’m adding this thread with threads filled with everything you need to know about Andrés Guardado and Sheriffs corruption surrounding their “Deputy Gangs”. Deep dive here 👇🏽
Sheriff Villanueva is discussing the issue of Body Cam's with the Compton City Council right now. Again puts blame on the County Board of Sups for the delay. States if there are no more delays, the soonest he could implement Body Cams, if approved, is October.
Sheriff says rollout would take 18 months to upgrade all stations IT for the necessary infrastructure. 5 newer stations were already fitted because according to Sheriff, the County Board wanted one in each district with body cams, and they already had the IT infastruture to do so
Council Member Emma Sharif get's Sheriff Villanueva to push Compton to the top of the priority list for installing body cams.
