Misconception #2: come back if “worse or short of breath”
-Most people can’t quantify short of breath, esp if they’ve never felt short of breath before
-Walk in place for 1 min.Sing your ABCs. If you can’t finish song or steps w/o breathing hard, you need to be seen immediately
Misconception #3: only old or unhealthy people die from #COVIDー19
-Everyone is at risk for #COVIDー19. I have cared for healthy 20,30&40 year olds who have died from covid or are now discharged home on oxygen because their lungs are destroyed.
-PS. Every age is a spreader.
Misconception #4: masks don’t work
-initial messaging was masks are to keep others safe. @CDCgov finally came out last month and said what we all know. Masks stop the spread of respiratory illnesses.
-masks keep me safe. They keep you safe. Decreases viral load in shared air.
Misconception #5: one small gathering won’t matter. No one is sick.
-time from exposure to onset of #COVIDー19 symptoms is 2-14 days. What you feel like now is a reflection of what you were exposed to 2 wks ago.
-small group w/no masks is why entire families have caught covid
Misconception #6: I’m clear, I have a negative #covid test
-That’s like saying, I’ll drink a bottle of wine at dinner because I took a pregnancy test & it’s neg. but I’ve been having unprotected sex every day,all day & I’m not on birth control.
-neg test today doesn’t clear you
Misconception #7: vaccine will save us. I can do whatever I want.
-on any given year, 40-60% of people get #flushot, decreases spread & severity of illness
-#vaccines are not a magic bullet, but will help. We are still months away from widespread distribution & long term data
Misconception #8: don’t come to the ED unless you are really sick
-in the beginning, we scared everyone & said don’t overwhelm us, only come in if you are really sick.
-covid treatment works best if you treat BEFORE hyper-immune response. Mild-mod severity, we can do much more.
-the destruction to the lungs, directly making people more likely to have blood clots, direct impact on brain/heart/lungs/kidneys/liver is like nothing we have ever seen before. It is NOTHING like the flu.
Misconception #10: if I get sick, I’ll just go to the hospital & get treated
-We are running out of staff & beds because the entire US is on fire. If you need specialists, I won’t be able to transfer you out. You may be in a hall or closet because I created a bed space for you.
