Here is the thing. Sidney Powell is evil. The GOP is evil. Everyone supporting and enabling Trump is evil.
But the reason they exist and exert power is because they know what a HUGE number of people in America wants to hear. This is why they win elections. It's simple... (thread)
Folks say that Dems should stop saying things like "Defund the police", "Black lives matter" and "Green New Deal", because they scare away the "real America." Folks say that Dems should talk about issues that make "real America" listen. You know, pocket-book issues. Jobs and shit
But Dems ARE talking about this stuff. They talk about the things that rural and suburban America needs in the XXI century. Which party is talking about broadband internet in the rural areas? Which party is talking about job retraining? Which party is talking about NEW jobs?..
The problem isn't that the Dems don't have ideas for "real America." The problem is that the Dems' ideas, while the only workable ones out there, are not the ones the "real America" wants to hear. The "real America" wants things to be how they used to.
"At least in my life"...
The "real America" wants to live in thriving rural areas where folks grow corn on ma's and pa's farms and get rich. Where a high-school drop out can walk into a factory and score a lifetime union job with a great wage and a nice health benefits plan. Where being white means a lot
They have zero time for job retraining or for building solar panels in Idaho or for medical insurance that also helps "urban" people. They want a fantasy, they want someone to turn the clock back to when soda pop was 1 cent a bottle and the dick was still hard...
The GOP can't make their lives better. At all. Nobody can. The time can't be turned back. The rural America of 1953 isn't coming back. Black people aren't shipping themselves back to Africa. But the GOP knows how to sell the phantasy. How to make them FEEL good...
And they know how to turn them on with bullshit culture wars, which, after all, are more fun to get worked up about than thinking that coal mining is going extinct within your kid's lifetime.
And that's what the GOP and Trump do. They sell bullshit fairy tales. And anger.
The Democrats' problem is not that they don't have real, workable ideas. Or that they are dominated by wild-eyed utopians.
The Democrats' problem is that a huge swath of America wants to be told bumper-sticker nursery rhymes, horror stories and superhero comics.
This is it.

Back to "The Queen's Gambit", which is still great. I am on the last episode, and I am still not sure I have learned how the horse, the officer or the lady move, but... WOW, this is a hard no!!!! Image
OK, I get the ominous darkness and the soldiers. If it weren't dark and there weren't any figures in peaked hats, how would American audiences know it's set in Russia?!
But "introduces excitedly"? Slava's Collective Farm Bull Shit Detector is going off!..
No, no, no, no, no! While Soviet TV announcers could occasionally be either excited or exciting, venue announcers had to maintain Sphynxian utmost dignity. None of your pro boxing theatrics, no long vowels or rolling consonants, all of this was waaaay beneath their dignity...

Back to watching "The Queen's Gambit." I am still loving it, because the female lead is absolutely amazing, and the chess nerds are ador... WAIT??? Are you actually pronouncing him "ah-leh-KINE"????
ARE YOU NUTS????
Listen, I get it, Russian names are hard. I mean, we are already dealing with the world where someone named Borgov exists. And, I will let you on on a little secret: Russians pronounce the name wrong, too. They call him "ah-LYO-heen."
The right way is, of course, "ah-LYEH-een"
The "e" in the end is the result of his taking the French citizenship. The French stick the "e" at the end of all Russian names that end with an "in" (see, Poutine, for instance), just to make sure they pronounce it properly ("een" and not "en"). English grammar doesn't apply!

After two presidents who had to pretend to be Christian for political purposes, we are about to have one who actually believes in a magical, blindness-curing Jew, and we have no choice but to regard this as a positive development, so what the hell does this say about the world?
And don't give me the crap about Obama being an actual Christian! The guy was brought up to be secular and trust in science. You telling me that, upon becoming older and smarter, he went: "Hey, now I do believe there was once a dude who could turn water into alcoholic beverages!"
Like, "Yeah, it's time for me to cast aside all the childhood stories about history and science and embrace the cold, hard truth that a Middle Eastern woman who never had sex gave birth to a blue-eyed Viking 2000 years ago, and he walked on water and wrote books!"
Yeah. Please.

I am on Episode 4 of "The Queen's Gambit", and here are my takeaways:
1) It is very, very good
2) Borgov in not a Russian name. It is not even an approximation of one. Please, don't think that sticking an "ov" to the end of a random collection of sounds makes it Russian...
By the same token, we can assume that sticking a "son" to anything will make it an American name. Like "Eliktrifikatsyason." Or "Otmorozilyaytsason." Hi, I am Otmorozilyaytsason. Dzheyms Otmorozilyaytsason, a famous American secret agent. It's a very common name in Yankee land.
Borgov is a name of an alien race whose members are devoid of individuality and are bred to think and act as a collect.... AAaaaaaaaahhh! You sly devils you! I see what you did there!

Another personal thread. Previously, I have told the story of my grandfathers, both genuine, extremely badass WWII heroes, whose stories I have only recently uncovered in the Russian Defense Ministry archives. This time, I will talk about my grandma. Who was even more heroic.
Yelizaveta Pokhis was born in the Russian Empire in 1915, in a tiny Ukrainian village of no historical import and negligible population, to a family of a Jewish farmer, 5th out of 7 children. Her grandpa poked his own eye out to avoid a 25-year conscription into the Czar's army.
Three of the kids in the family were both her siblings and cousins. Their dad had lost his first wife and then married her (much) younger sister. My grandma's oldest half-sister/cousin was raped and murdered by the White Army in 1918, during a routine Civil War pogrom...

When it comes down to it (assuming we are not headed for a coup and a civil war), the Democrats have won the White House, picked up at least 2 Senate seats and kept their House majority.
So, why is all the rending of clothes and gnashing of teeth? They did, repeat after me, good!
What they didn't do was knock off Republican incumbents in either deep red states (which TX still is and SC, KS, MT and IA always will be) or bluish/purplish states (ME and NC) in which they had sub-optimal candidates.
Is that really a terrible disappointment?
They have also lost some House seats in districts that had no business electing Democrats in the first place. A huge pro-Trump turnout was no doubt the reason. They failed to flip some state legislatures, for the same reason.
They lost Florida, which, admit it, is a red state.
