Last night I tweeted comparing NY and FL COVID positive tests. The tweet kind of blew up and I got a lot of responses, smart and less smart. I responded to some. (cont)
But one response really sends me in a fucking rage: the idea that NY in open. My kids haven't been to school since mid-Nov and when they were it was for 2 *sometimes* 3 pathetic days a week. That is not open. That is not fucking open.
Friends in NY who have businesses are straight suffering. Do people who tweeted that NY is open really not know a single business owner? Do they think everything is fine because their stupid pajama job is still paying them?
Bars are closed. Restaurants are open at some absurdly tiny capacity for NO REASON at all. A 100 person capacity restaurant in Buffalo can have 50 people, one in NYC can have 25. There is literally zero science to support this stupidity. It's just cruelty.
Gyms are at 33% capacity. Why 33%? Who knows! Open a biz, spend yrs building it, then get assigned an arbitrary capacity number. Group fitness remains closed. Why? Because! That's why. But NY is apparently "open" according to ppl who don't give a shit about these stuggling ppl.
We talk a lot about bubbles but literally no bubble is as thick as the one between people who have spent this year baking bread and getting paid and the ones who don't sleep at night because the business they put everything into can't open for no reason involving science.
But I literally repeat myself: nypost.com/2020/08/23/its…
There are jobs we don't even talk about that support all the businesses that have closed. It's not just the businesses you see that are suffering in a closed NY. There are so many you don't see. Payroll companies, laundry, cleaning services, so many people KNOW NY remains closed.
Being a lifelong New Yorker means I know these people. You don't grow up here and only get to know the pajama class. You support every friend's new business, give them a dollar to put on their wall. To watch these businesses die for no reason, based on no science, is crushing.
Anyway, NY is not open. I'll accept any conversation except the one that erases all the people hurting in our closed NY. NY is not open, it's broken and damaged and at risk to not recover for a long time. It's closed and if you don't think so you should really check yourself.

Cuomo press conferences now have a...soundtrack?
When you hear Christmas music you should think of the COVID grinch, really.
Cuomo says bar and restaurant transmission way down, gym spread not as dramatically down. "Astonishing" how low infection rates in school. Says now it's spreading through family and social gatherings.

This is from the letter Schools Chancellor Carranza sent to teachers today. Why does he keep referring to "blended learning" if they are phasing out the blended model? The letter does not mention moving to a full-time model whatsoever.
The "wherever possible" line makes me think I celebrated too early. It's really not possible in many places if they don't let go of social distance requirements. And, clearly, not enough staff to keep half-classes going.
What ppl are parsing from this, yes, confusing news is areas where a lot of ppl chose remote may be returning to full-time in-person. BUT it's very possible, likely even, that some number of ppl chose remote because some insane 1-2, maybe 3, day/wk model couldn't work for them.

To say I am shocked, that NYC is reopening (for now only elementary) schools and reopening them full-time instead of the stupid blended thing, is a mild understatement.
Wait, what does it mean that "any school that has space and staffing" can move to 5 days a week? Are we still social distancing or not? No school has space and staffing to continue with social distancing and half-size classes.
Nobody understands how schools will close due to cases and de Blasio sounds Cuomo-esque when he says he's confused about the confusion. I remain confused even after his second attempt at answering the question.

The message sent by the actions of the hypocritical elite is that COVID-19 isn't that dangerous--not matter what they say. My column in Saturday's @nypost: nypost.com/2020/11/20/our…
It's reminiscent of climate change activists, who loudly & often talk about the environment but fly in private planes and live in houses w/giant footprints. Just speak passionately about masks and responsible COVID behavior and then do whatever you want. nypost.com/2020/11/20/our…
I used to joke that I don't know why climate change deniers bother with it. Just say you're super concerned about the environment and drive your hummer. Leonardo DiCaprio sailed on his giant yacht alone. Al Gore's house uses the energy of 10 of your houses. (cont)

Chris Cuomo went out, while actually having COVID. Chris got a haircut, unmasked, and didn’t get the fine the rest of us would get. Chris’s wife worked out, indoors, unmasked, while the rest of us could not. Be like Gov. Cuomo’s family: do what you want.
Want the receipts on all of this? Start here. My timeline of Chris Cuomo breaking quarantine while actually having COVID, and then emerging from the basement like a Pravda segment:
Here’s his wife working out with a trainer in July. Maskless, indoors. Gyms didn’t open until September and then with a ton of regulation. But they’re not plebes like you.

Can all the people who just “took down a dictator” maybe care a little bit about this tyrant?
I live how there is ZERO science involved. You have a mansion where you can spread out? 10 people. You have a 400 sq ft studio? 10 people. Gov. Cuomo doesn’t do critical thinking and he thinks you don’t either.
You can just see that Gov. Cuomo counted out how many people he’ll see on Thanksgiving and decided that was the number for the rest of us too. Don’t listen to this, do what you want. See your family. 10, 12, 25 of them.
