Boston's historic Harriet Tubman House sold by @UnitedSouthEnd and demolished... for LUXURY CONDOS.

Thread 👇🏿
Since 1908, the Boston Harriet Tubman House was the historic community hub for Black and working class people in the South End — until it was demolished to make way for luxury condos.
In 1904, six Black women — including one of Tubman’s friends Julia O. Henson — rented the first Harriet Tubman House at 37 Holyoke Street in the South End to provide shelter to other Black women who had just moved from the South.
Since then the House served as a refuge for its community, offering services such as job training programs, adult education, senior programs, child care, art exhibitions and much more.

Every day, neighbors gathered in the lobby to socialize in a safe, welcoming environment.
The Harriet Tubman House also housed six nonprofits that served the local community — all of which are now displaced from the neighborhood due to its sale and demolition.
The Harriet Tubman House was sold by nonprofit @UnitedSouthEnd in the rapidly gentrifying South End.

Starting in 2015, USES allowed the House to deteriorate to later justify its sale to luxury condo developer New Boston Ventures for $13.25 million.
@UnitedSouthEnd refused to fundraise for the House and cut all programs for adults, including seniors, while spending down their endowment and generously compensating their leadership team.
@UnitedSouthEnd could have sold the House to another nonprofit to keep this irreplaceable hub in community hands, and in fact received bids that would have both accomplished that aim AND earned more money than the deal with the luxury condo developer.
@UnitedSouthEnd and New Boston Ventures boast that the development will have 17% “affordable” housing. The cheapest of those units would sell for $186,400.
The median net worth of Black families in Boston is $8.00.

(That's not a typo)
The community-wide struggle began in 2019 with the Black-women led I Am Harriet coalition, which @bostonpsl joined that summer.

The coalition organized a number of demonstrations in hopes to build a mass movement strong enough to save the House.

One coalition member and lifelong South End resident told Liberation News, “The greed and deception of @UnitedSouthEnd, the City, and developers stole this community’s last piece of Black history.”
It is a tragedy that capitalism’s rapacious profit motive destroyed the Harriet Tubman House.

The city government and developers will continue their path of destruction across the historically Black Roxbury neighborhood.
The people must continue to rise up and shout, “Enough is enough! People over profits!”

Today the world is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Friedrich Engles, renowned across the globe as one of the greatest revolutionaries and theorists to ever live.
Engels, who along with Karl Marx founded the modern communist movement, was born on November 28, 1820 in what was then the Kingdom of Prussia. He dedicated his life to the revolutionary struggle of the proletariat to free itself from capitalism and usher in a new era of history.
Beyond the key documents he co-authored with Marx, Engels’ work has stood the test of time as an essential guide for successive generations of revolutionaries who want to understand the world in order to change it.

Biden is wasting no time putting together his thoroughly anti-worker, ultra-militarist government. Let's take a look at these cabinet picks. THREAD:
Long-time Biden aide Antony Blinken has secured the position of Secretary of State.

Blinken was Deputy Secretary of State during Barack Obama’s presidency, where he supported the disastrous war on Libya which created the conditions for the enslavement of Black people in Libya.
Earlier in Blinken’s career, when he was a top aide to then-Senator Joe Biden, he supported the invasion of Iraq and advocated the colonial-style partition of Iraq along sectarian lines.

PSL STATEMENT on the defeat of Donald Trump

More than 70 million people voted to oust Donald Trump. This was not a vote for Joe Biden, a truly uninspiring candidate who became the nominee when the Democratic Party ruling class establishment united to stop Bernie Sanders in March Image
Nor did the historic voter turnout for Biden signify support for his pro-Wall Street, pro-war positions and his role as an architect of the current system of policing and mass incarceration.
This morning the major corporate-owned media networks all announced that Joe Biden had sufficient electoral college votes to become the next president of the United States.

Right wing protesters have mobilized in several hotspots across the country following Tuesday’s election, using intimidation tactics in an attempt to tip the scales for Trump.
In Detroit yesterday a crowd of right wingers stormed a vote counting center to demand that absentee ballots not be tabulated, chanting “Stop the count!” The Trump campaign filed a lawsuit to halt vote-counting.
The racist character of the protests is clear considering Detroit is a city that is 79 percent African-American. On Nov 5. the Michigan Court of Claims denied the lawsuit, and counting is expected to continue for now.
