1/ What most vividly shows the difference between Ron DeSantis and Xavier Becerra? The crusade, and then the failure of that crusade, to make America into a fully authoritarian nation, and the return to democracy.
2/ Donald Trump is a full-blown authoritarian; anyone who’s ever read a decent history of Germany, Italy, or Spain in the 1930s, or knows the history of Pinochet in Chile, knows this is an irrefutable truth.
3/ But authoritarians don’t come to power by themselves; they have helpers. Ron DeSantis, a helper, bet that if he could cover up Covid deaths and misery in Florida, it would keep Trump in the White House and solidify DeSantis’ authoritarian political future as a “made man.”
4/ Like all good authoritarian helpers throughout history, DeSantis was willing not just to let people die, but also to take explicit actions that caused the deaths of thousands his own citizens so he and Trump could strengthen the power of authoritarianism in America.
5/ He wasn’t alone in this, of course. The same is true of Bill Barr, Rudy Giuliani, several other Republican governors 220 congressional Republicans who won’t say Biden won. They’d all been working, hoping, depending on Trump’s reelection to solidify American authoritarianism.
6/ And they weren’t alone, either. Numerous foreign dictators pushed these authoritarian efforts, flooding Facebook, Twitter and phony “news“ websites with propaganda pushing Trump and his authoritarian efforts. Like in 2016, the campaign was widespread, complex and well-funded.
7/ They all gave it their best, and they nearly won, but it’s now clear that Trump and, for the moment, rightwing authoritarianism in the executive branch, have gone down in flames. Which brings us to a Xavier Becerra.
8/ One of our brightest hopes now is Joe Biden‘s appointment of Xavier Becerra as HHS Secretary. A former member of Congress and now California’s Attorney General, he’s an outspoken advocate of Medicare for all, even defending it on Fox News.
9/ The first member of his family to graduate from college, Becerra opposed the 2008 bank bailout bill because it didn’t put enough money in the hands of average people and didn’t help working class homeowners. He fought hard to stop Medicaid and Medicare cuts.
10/ In other words, Biden is moving our government away from supporting authoritarianism and putting into power people who openly advocate democracy, the rule of law, and economic rights for the average working person.
11/ Ron DeSantis bet that he’d have full-blown authoritarianism with Trump as president again, and thus was willing to let Floridians die to help Trump hang onto power. He lost that bet. And now Bill Barr and the other rats are deserting the sinking ship.
12/ Meanwhile, prosecutors and Attorneys General across the country are preparing to hold Trump and some of his authoritarian enablers to account. Hopefully, in two years America’s voters will do the same to their authoritarian allies in Congress.
13/ Dr. Martin Luther King talked about “the arc of the moral universe“ that “bends towards justice.“ In the contrast between Ron DeSantis and Xavier Becerra we vividly see the bending of that arc. Hope is on the horizon: stay safe and keep working to rebuild this country.

1/ How do we deal with a Republican Party that’s become a traitor to humanity itself? (THREAD)
2/ Politicians in New York State are discussing making Covid vaccination mandatory, and, predictably, Republican cultists are freaking out. “Freedom!“ they scream as they run around maskless, assaulting their fellow citizens with virus-laden breath.
3/ GOP cultists claim that vaccine manufacturers are participating in mind control experiments and public health measures are “un-American,” while we are dying from the highest rates of Covid infection and death in the developed world.

1/ When will America wake up to the evil that has seized the Republican Party?
2/ We’ve seen it around the world and throughout history: when a political party or government exists solely to serve the very wealthy, and begins to lose power, they inevitably turn to authoritarianism and police violence.
3/ We saw this in Florida when Gov. Ron DeSantis sent State police with guns drawn to intimidate the family of whistleblower Rebekah Jones, who he’d earlier fired for refusing to lie about Florida coronavirus statistics and is publishing a daily “Florida coronavirus dashboard.“

1/ The GOP has been running a con job and grift on the American people for 40 years, and now Trump has added his own new and very profitable twist to it. He’s not going to let go of it any day soon.
2/ The Washington Post headline reads: “Trump raises $495 million since mid-October, including a massive haul fueled by misleading appeals about election.” He’s raised over $140 million just since he lost the election!
3/ The headline over at Raw Story today reads: “A mysterious company created 9 months ago is the RNC’s highest paid vendor of the 2020 election.” Nobody knows who the company is, what they do, or who owns it, but it took $49 million from donors to the RNC.

1/ How do we prevent the next grifter-in-chief and stop Congress from enabling criminals in government?
2/ Trump and McConnell are both pushing pardons. Trump wants pardons for his criminal cronies, enablers, and children. McConnell wants pardons for meat packing plants and corporate criminals.
3/ Although past presidents have had family members working for them - Attorney General Bobby Kennedy is a famous example - none have ever had to pardon their family members for criminal activity in the White House. Until Trump.

1/ Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans are proposing to let employers injure or even kill their workers and bring back the three-martini lunch...in exchange for one measly month of extended unemployment benefits.
2/ Senate Republicans are trying to sabotage both the incoming Biden administration and screw working people by refusing to extend expanded unemployment benefits in Mitch McConnell‘s new “stimulus“; it does, however, make it illegal for workers to sue their employers.
3/ It’s been six months since the House of Representatives passed the $3 trillion Heroes act that gave jobless people $600 a week, and more than two months since they passed a slimmed-down $2.2 trillion version that gave only $300 a week. But the GOP said no to both.

1/ Florida governor Ron DeSantis says that he won’t put into place a mask mandate because people in blue states that have used mask mandates are still getting infected. His logic is extraordinary; let’s extend it.
2/ All across the northern American states today, people are wearing coats, gloves, scarves and hats as they go outdoors. Yet only around 1330 Americans die of hypothermia every year, and almost all of those people were wearing coats, gloves, scarves and/or hats!
3/ And the majority of people who die of hypothermia we’re not only wearing warm clothing, they also had pre-existing conditions! That must be the real cause that they died, right? Those 1300 death certificates must be wrong!
