For the second time this week, a nurse has asked me whether the term LGBTQ+ should be replaced by the phrase “sexual and gender minorities” in nursing texts.

1/
In both instances, it was a heterosexual, cisgender nurse leader asking me.

2/
Part of why this question keeps coming up is because NIH uses the term “sexual and gender minorities.”

3/
However, people who are *part* of the community generally use the terms “LGBTQ+” or “LGBTQIA+.”

4/
The “A” stands for “asexual,” not “ally,” BTW.

5:
The term “sexual and gender minorities” others people who are LGBTQ+, defining us solely by our relation to (or deviation from) those in the majority.

6/
Nurses and other health professionals:

Please don’t try to rebrand LGBTQ+ people as “sexual and gender minorities.” Since gender and sexual orientation are both spectrums, there are WAY more of us than you think.

7/
Thanks! ♥️🧡💛💚💙💜

👇🏻A thread about #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth

I never thought much about breast cancer when I was younger.

My mom died of ovarian cancer when she was 52.

My grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer but she was old and had Alzheimer’s. I wasn’t worried.

1/
But then in 2010, my first cousin once removed - also a college professor, coincidentally - died of metastatic breast cancer. Melanie was 44 years old. I was 38 at the time.

2/
Early that year, I’d had a minor scare: a mammogram and ultrasound of a teeny tiny but palpable lump had been flagged as concerning. I had a stereotactic biopsy. All good.

Months later, another lump, another round of tests. All good.

But the seeds of worry had been planted.

Kudos to @EmersonCollege (and their #COVID19 lead @emuurisepp) for doing a stellar job!

A key component of their success: *mandatory* weekly testing of all students taking classes on campus, with results reported directly to the College.

I’d love to see @UVA do this!
Emerson has done more that 20K tests and has had only 18 positives. In a large, densely-populated city. With high-rise dorms. emerson.edu/one-emerson/da…

If @UVA tested every student taking classes on Grounds, every week, I suspect risk behaviors would decrease.
The wastewater testing and random testing is great, but I suspect mandatory weekly testing would make individual students feel a greater sense of urgency to avoid behaviors that could expose them to COVID-19.

If you’re planning to vote for Trump because you like his position on [guns, taxes, abortion, whatever], please understand that your vote will indicate you also like his position on white supremacy.

A white supremacist you like better than Biden is still a white supremacist.
Imagine supporting a convicted pedophile for your local school board because you like their vision for education reform.
Imagine urging a local restaurant to hire a head chef who has said repeatedly that they like pissing in customers’ food — all because you like their plans for lowering prices.

Have you ever wondered how diverse an authorship team could be if there were NO gatekeeper and all were welcome to participate?

1/
We're still waiting to confirm 4 co-authors but, of the ones we've confirmed so far:

21% identify as a person of color and/or under-represented minority

26% identify as a person with a disability

36% identify as LGBTQ+

2/
All co-author recruitment was done via Twitter, and 100% of the collaboration was done using Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Forms.

No zoom calls, phone calls, or meetings.

👇🏻 Radical proposal...

What if promotion & tenure committees nationwide agreed to exclude ALL accomplishments from March to December 2019 when reviewing dossiers/packets?

1/
Instead, candidates‘ would submit a one-page statement about what they did during Mar-Dec 2019 to take care of themselves, their families, and their communities during the pandemic.

2/
Rather than evaluating “productivity” for that time period, P&T committees would be simply acknowledging - without judgment - that whatever each candidate did during that time period was exactly what they needed to be doing.

Greyson’s latest vocal tic is “eat that booty like groceries.”
And when I say “tic,” I mean an actual tic - he has Tourette’s and coprolalia.
This one is definitely better than the “fuck this shit!” tic he had freshman year that flared up any time he was in a quiet lecture hall or classroom.
