Importance of non mortality ICU outcomes

- SF36 / eq5d assessments for functional outcomes

- cognition and mood disorders MOCA / HADS assessments

Risk factors for worse ICU outcome:

- age - purely as a marker of organ reserve
- illness trajectory prior to ICU
- pre existing mental & physical health
- duration of delirium related to long term cognition outcome

There is good evidence in the literature for “dose-response” relationships between severity of illness and post-illness function, ie. ICU have worse outcome than hospitalised patients.

The level of dysfunction was also worse than patients expected. So important in consent.
